Also, there is bound to be discontent and resistance from other passengers. As for the train itself, it would difficult to separate the coaches. Making partitions inside the coaches is a violation of the evacuation policy of the DMRC as the train goes through tunnels and emergency gates are at the end of the train.Currently, eight-coach trains are running at full capacity and the DMRC can’t increase the number of coaches. “If we take out coaches from existing infrastructure (to provide the facility), then we are depriving the common man from space,” the metro official said.

“Car owners who are coming (to Metro) they must get some space to sit. Like, let us say some of the clients of senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi travel in big cars such as Mercedes and Toyota. But when such people are using Metro, why can’t you make suitable arrangements for more space,” the bench also comprising Justice AK Sikri and Justice R Bhanumathi told solicitor general Ranjit Kumar and Delhi government counsel Rahul Mehra.“You can have premium fares for such persons. Maybe you can increase the fare five- fold for such passengers. For instance if the fare is Rs 20 make it Rs 100 for such passengers for a dignified place to sit,” justice Thakur said. Singhvi had appeared for car manufacturer – Mahindra – that wants the top court to revisit its December 16 order banning registration of diesel cars with over 2000 cc engine capacity. To make Metro travel comfortable for the common man, the bench advised the corporation to increase frequency of the trains. On senior advocate Harish Salve’s suggestion, the bench said the waiting time between two trains should be brought down from 3 to 1.5 minutes.Metro stations have witnessed a surge in passengers after the odd-even formula kicked in from January 1. The first working day of the year – January 4 – saw around 35 lakh commuters using the Metro services. The bench asked both the Centre and Delhi government to respond on the issue within four weeks and posted the matter for further hearing to February 2.

Gurgaon Metro| Rapid Metro Rail ready to increase train frequency
Rapid Metro is a metro system in Gurgaon, a satellite city of Delhi, connecting the business districts and also works as a feeder system for the Delhi Metro.
“We are waiting for fine print of the odd-even car scheme. We are fully prepared. If the scheme translates into more demand, we would be able to ramp up within 20 minutes,” Rajiv Banga, CEO, Rapid Metro, told.
The Rapid Metro system gets almost 75-80 per cent of its passengers from the Delhi Metro interchange station. Additionally, it is also backing on tie-up with shuttle.com.
“These are 12-17 seater shuttles. This can also be increased, although it requires more advance notice,” said Banga.
Rapid Metro has seen a 25 per cent increase in ridership since March (eight months) on the working days, said Banga. “This is sustained increase, though on certain days, it has been as high as 42,000 a day,” he added.
On the weekends, when the traffic is usually low, Rapid Metro has started running a concept train – called joy express — basically allowing kids and their guardians to book a train and have a party in the train that is closed and runs on the circuit. Rapid Metro dedicates a train for such events in which doors do not open. Each joy ride express sees a booking of 30 kids and 40-50 adults, shared Banga. He added that the company is also setting up a double level foot overbridge with escalators that can help people access the IndusInd Bank Metro station from another side of the national highway.

Vijayawada Metro| Metro rail deadline extended for tenders
Vajayawada: The Metro Rail project is likely to be delayed as the prospective bidders have requested for extension of deadline. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which is supposed to open the tenders in the first week of December, extended the deadline up to December 29 following their request.
The DMRC has extended the deadline four times till now for want of response and requests from the prospective bidders. According to information, the bidders are taking up surveys and studies on their own. The DMRC officials, however, are tight-lipped in this regard.
According to sources, Tata, Nagarjuna Constructions, Afcons and URC have evinced interest in taking up the project. The DMRC has already conducted a pre-bid meeting.
The DMRC has planned to construct two corridors in the city at a cost of Rs.

6,823 crore. The 26-km metro project is expected to be completed by 2018. As many as 24 stations will come up on the two corridors – Penamaluru to PNBS and Nidamanuru to PNBS. The DMRC has set the ball rolling for the Vijayawada Metro Project by calling e-tenders in two parts for the PNBS – Nidamanur corridor in September. The works include architectural finishing, water supply, sanitary installation and drainage works. Both the works are to be completed in 24 months. DMRC has set November 20 as deadline for submission of tenders for both parts as per the notifications hosted on its website in September this year. The deadline was, however, later extended.
The metro project was considered keeping in view the potential of the city and likely projected increase in population. The DMRC authorities are planning to construct the Eluru corridor as it will be connected to depot at Nidamanuru.
The Bandar Road corridor will be taken up at a later stage as soon as the depot works were completed. More so, there are no land acquisition issues on Eluru Road compared to Bandar Road. The Eluru Road corridor is expected to complete by 2018 while the Bandar Road would be completed by 2019. The depot would also be completed by 2018.
An interchange bus station would come up near PNBS. The passengers travelling on Bandar and Eluru Road can board and alight there to change the train.
