Mogharpada Depotwas intended to be the city’s largest metro depot. It will have 16 stabling lines (SBLs) for 32 trains in its new form, with a further 16 SBLs planned in the future. Additionally, it will have five inspection bay lines (IBL), with plans for five more in the future.39 × 6 trains will initially reside in the depot (plus more in the future for Line-10 & Line-11). DMRC completes tunneling work between Krishna Park extn & Keshopur on Magenta line

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on 19th November achieved a significant construction milestone in Phase 4 with the completion of tunnelling work between Krishna Park Extension and Keshopur on the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg corridor.
A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) broke through this morning at Krishna Park Extension after boring a 1.4-kilometre-long tunnel in the presence of the Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India & Chairman, DMRC Sh. Manoj Joshi, Managing Director, DMRC, Sh. Vikas Kumar and other senior officials.
This tunnel breakthrough was achieved using a mammoth 73-metre-long TBM. Two parallel circular tunnels for up and down movement have now been constructed on this stretch, which is part of a 2.2-kilometre-long underground section from Janakpuri West to Keshopur. The work on the other parallel tunnel in this section was completed in December last year.
Completing this stretch is a significant achievement for DMRC since this work faced repeated constraints due to the Covid – 19 pandemic. The workforce was retained following all the guidelines, and the work schedule was planned accordingly. Apart from the twin tunnels, the ramp and the entry/ exit have been completed on this underground stretch, while about 70 per cent of the Krishna Park Extension station has also been completed. Civil work of this particular underground section will be completed by early next year though the entire Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg corridor will be ready by September 2025.
This new tunnel stretch is a continuation of the earlier Magenta line tunnel already constructed for the presently operative Botanical Garden – Janakpuri West corridor. The tunnel has been constructed approximately at a depth of 14 to 16 metres. About 2,000 rings have been installed in the tunnel. It has an inner diameter of 5.8 metres. The tunnel alignment runs along the Outer ring road and below multi-storied built-up structures.
The tunnelling work involved innumerable challenges, like shifting sewer lines at a depth of 8 metres using the micro tunnelling method. In addition, due to heavy traffic on the Outer Ring Road, a subway was constructed using the box-pushing method without disturbing the traffic flow.
The tunnel has been built with the proven technology of EPBM (Earth pressure balancing method) with concrete lining made up of precast tunnel rings. The tunnel rings have been cast at the fully mechanized casting yard setup at Mundka. These concrete segments were cured with a steam curing system to achieve early strength.
All necessary safety precautions were taken while constructing the tunnel below the built-up structures by monitoring the ground movements with susceptible instruments fixed on the nearby structures. With these measures, it was ensured that there was no settlement anywhere.
As part of the Phase 4 work approved, 28.76 kilometres of underground lines will be constructed. The Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg corridor will have underground sections of 9.41 kilometres in total.
A TBM is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross-section through various soil and rock strata. They can be designed to bore through anything from hard rock to sand. TBMs have revolutionized the way tunnelling work is done worldwide, as tunnels can now be boring without disturbing the buildings and other structures on the surface.
TBMs are especially useful for underground tunnelling work in congested urban areas. DMRC has been using TBMs for its tunnelling work since Phase 1. In Phase 3, when about 50 kilometres of underground sections were built, about 30 TBMs were pressed into service in the national capital.

First TBM of Agra Metro passes factory test

AGRA (Metro Rail News): Robbins, manufacturer of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), completed factory acceptance testing (FAT) on 215-323, the first of two rebuilt tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for underground Package AGCC-02 of the 29.40 km Agra Metro Phase 1 project, in late October.Earlier, the CEC-CICI JV used its 6.52 m Earth Pressure Balance TBM to construct the 2.35 km of Package UG-1B for the Jaipur Metro Phase 1 project between the Chandpole and Badi Chaupar stations. The project’s final breakthrough was made in July 2017.The equipment was subsequently transported to Robbins’ yard in Gurgaon’s Sector 74, which underwent a thorough refurbishment.Afcons Infrastructure- Sam India Jv used a machine and another refurbished TBM in Agra to construct a 14.25 km Line-1 7.93 km RBS College Ramp -the Taj Mahal Ramp section. The contract for this portion, worth Rs. 1819.79 crores, was awarded to the Afcons-SAM Consortium by Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in March 2022, with a 48-month completion period.Twin tunnels connect the seven stations, the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, SN Medical College, Agra College, Raja ki Mandi, and RBS College as part of their portion from chainage 3630.000 to 11564.485.

Pune Metro Line 3 achieves completion of 2000th piling work at Hinjewadi

PUNE (Metro Rail News): The work of Pune Metro Line 3, aka Puneri Metro, on the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar route has now gained rapid momentum. The construction of the 23-km-long Project, jointly launched by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PICTMRL), a Tata group’s special purpose vehicle company, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), has reached the stage of completing Two Thousand (2000) pilings on Friday, 18th November.

The 2000th piling work was completed today at the proposed station No. 01 of Pune Metro Line 3 in front of Magapolice at Maan, Hinjewadi. The significant part is the 1000th piling work was done on 12th July this year. This means developers have achieved a mega speed of completing another 1000 piling work within just four months, making it to 2000 piling.

“Along with this, a barricading work of 16 thousand 414 RMT on Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar metro line has been completed. A total of 180 piers have been completed. The total number of pile caps for piers, including the pile caps to be made for the station, has now reached 314. We are working towards increasing this number even faster in the upcoming days and are truly grateful to the citizens of Pune for their ongoing support extended to this Project,” Mr Alok Kapoor, Chief Executive Officer of Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, said.

What is ‘Piling Work’

Piling work is mainly the construction process used to lay the foundation. The pile cap on which the station is to be erected is the foundation connecting the pier and the piling dug for it. Before placing this pile cap, pits of uniform size are made according to the total pressure on the pole in the ground, which is called a ‘pile’. One station pile cap stands on six such pilings. This process is completed in about 14 days. The total time required for this work is 14 days for actual construction, followed by a waiting period of 21 days. A pier can be erected on this pile cap in about a month. Meanwhile, essential stages like load tests and quality checks are fulfilled.
