Chennai Metro to have Multi-modal Transit Hubs in 23 Locations 

This aims to facilitate a robust interchange system for MRTS, MTC buses & Phase 1 metro at 23 locations.

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) plans to have multi-modal transit hubs at 23 locations in 116.1 km long Chennai Metro Phase 02. 

Transit Hubs

These hubs will feature seamless interchange facilities with existing transit facilities in the city like Suburban and MRTS trains, MTC buses & Metrorail Phase:01 lines. Transit hubs will be developed at 23 locations to facilitate easy commutation across different modes of transport. 

Project

These are a part of the Chennai metro Phase 2 that will be developed in stages from 2025 to 2028. 

Corridor 3 (Madhavaram to Siruseri Sipcot)  

The 45.4 km long Corridor 3 of the Chennai Metro Phase 02 from Madhavaram to Siruseri Sipcot will have nine hubs at the following locations 

  1. Thiruvanmiyur 
  2. Adyar Bus Depot 
  3. Mandaveli 
  4. Thirumayilai 
  5. Chetpet 
  6. Ayanavaram 
  7. Perambur Suburbs 
  8. Kilpauk 
  9. Thousand Lights 

The Metro stations at Thiruvanmiyur and Thirumayilai will be integrated with MRTS, while the metro stations at Mandaveli and Madhavaram will be integrated with Bus depots. 

Corridor 4 (Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass) 

The 16.1 km long Corridor 4 of the Chennai Metro Phase 02 from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass will have five hubs at the following locations 

  1. Kodambakkam 
  2. Iyyappanthangal 
  3. Poonamallee Bus terminus 
  4. Nandanam 
  5. Vadapalani 

Corridor 5 (Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur) 

The 44.6 Km long Corridor 5 of the Chennai Metro Phase 02 from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur will have nine hubs. 7 of them are at the following locations: 

  1. Madhavaram Bus Terminus 
  2. Villivakkam Bus Terminus 
  3. Annanagar 
  4. Koyambedu 
  5. Alandur 
  6. St ThoVillivakkam Vanuvampet 
  7. Kilkattali 

Better Connectivity 

These multi-modal transit hubs will significantly impact travel time as well as travel options for commuters in Chennai. This will also help develop a well-connected transit mode to support the backbone of developing metropolitan cities and make the lives of the residents easier and more comfortable. 

Enhanced Efficiency 

The emergence of multi-modal transit hubs will increase the overall efficiency of the city’s transport system by consuming much less time in interchanges and offering much less hassle to commuters.  The authorities are quite hopeful about the project.
