Chennai Metro Phase 1 comprises a 45 km network developed along two corridors-Washermenpet to Chennai International Airport and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount. The Phase 1 Extension between Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar, commissioned in 2021, which strengthened metro connectivity in the city’s northern and north-eastern zones, which are characterised by high population density and limited mass transit options. This extension has since been integrated into the broader expansion roadmap and is now being followed by the larger Phase 2 programme, which is intended to further augment network capacity and geographic coverage across Chennai.
