NEW DELHI, (Metro Rail News): The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has initiated the work of track laying on the Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (Delhi–Meerut RRTS). This semi high-speed rail line’s ballastless and ballasted track work has been assigned to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in October 2020.
Later, L&T started manufacturing precast track-slabs on a plant in Shatabdi Nagar. From there, these track slabs will be transported to the site and placed on the viaduct to ensure extremely accurate and fast track laying. As per NCRTC, these tracks will have low maintenance cost.
The first lot of Class A 880 grade rails have been arrived at Duhai for laying tracks in the Maintenance Depot and is being manufactured by Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, under the Make in India initiative of the Government of India. A total of 4000 MT of 60 KG 880 Grade Rail Class-A rails will be supplied for the Duhai Depot and the depot-line connecting to the 17 km priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai which is expected to become operational by March 2023.
As per NCRTC, the rest of the head hardened rails tracks will be made available in coming months. At present, work is going on at full swing for the RRTS and as per NCRTC, viaduct of 4 km stretch has been completed so far and track laying work has been started on the said stretch.
The Delhi–Meerut RRTS is a semi-high speed rail corridor of length 82.15 km connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut. It will have 22 stations. Once completed, the distance between Delhi and Meerut will be covered in less than an hour with trains operating on the route at top speed of 180 km per hour. The whole corridor is expected to become operational by 2025.
