VARANASI (Metro Rail News): The Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) deployed India’s first removable solar panel system between railway tracks. The 70-metre-long installation comprises 28 solar panels with a total capacity of 15 kWp. This pioneering project is designed to promote sustainable energy use within railway operations. If replicated on a wider scale, the initiative could play a crucial role in supporting Indian Railways’ vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
This initiative will ensure flexibility, as it will help integrate renewable energy solutions within the railway network without interfering with the movement of trains. As part of the design, the solar modules have been attached to the concrete sleepers with the help of epoxy resin, while rubber padding has been used to absorb shocks and vibrations caused by trains running over the tracks.
The removable nature of the system offers many advantages, as it simplifies routine maintenance and allows necessary work to be carried out without interrupting train services. If implemented on a larger scale, the concept holds the potential to generate nearly 321,000 kWh of electricity per kilometre annually.
