Chennai Metro | Power installation soon for North Metro line

0

Chennai: In keeping with the deadline of two years to connect North Chennai with metro network, work for the same is in full swing.  Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will be installing a critical power installation system, which is imperative to set up transit system operation. A tender has already been invited for installation of the system.

As per report by March 2020, the city’s Chennai metro network linking Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar stretch will be ready. This will be phase 1 extension covering 9km stretch.

CMRL floating the tender for the same hints that they want to speed up work. The metro officials want to finalise the firm that will be designing, manufacturing and installing overhead equipment (OHE) along the line of the track and integrated power supply needed to operation stations and trains.

The shortlisted firm will be expected to test and commission the critical elements of the project. Selected contractor will also have to train CMRL staff to offer technical and maintenance assistance.

The installation of these structures will be completed at the elevated maintenance depot that is being constructed at Wimco Nagar with 17 stabling lines.  The selected contractor is expected to wrap up the work in 18 months.

According to preliminarily plan North Chennai will be connected to nine stations and three of them will be made underground.

In the phase-1 for the 45km stretch, Siemens AG of Germany and its Indian arms Siemens Ltd India installed the power supply and OHE. When it came to operating trains in the two corridors of phase-1, CMRL employs 25kV AC traction power supplied through the OHE, selected for safety and energy competency. For utilities at the stations, CMRL uses 33kV of power.

It was in 2016 that construction work for North Chennai began. It took two years to wrap up tunnelling work of 2km from Washermenpet to Korukkupet.

Work has been underway to install all systems essential for operating trains, starting with ballastless tracks.

Chennai Metro officials shared that once laying down tracks work is completed they will begin other tasks. These include signalling and power supply equipment will be installed. Concurrently, construction of the metro stations, the elevated corridor and the depot is in progress.

Exclusive Media Interview with Dr I P Gautam, MD, Ahmedabad Metro
With all eyes now set on metro rail project in Ahmedabad and Gandhi Nagar, Metro Rail News spoke to the managing director, I. P. Gautam to get a detailed insight on the progress of the project.

In an exclusive interview with Darshana Shukla. Dr. I. P. Gautam, MD, Ahmedabad Metro shared an overview of the work going, last mile connectivity and interesting initiatives planned by the officials for commuters. Here is an excerpt from the interview:

  • Work on the first phase of Ahmedabad Metro is gaining momentum with authorities eyeing to start trail runs before 2019 election? What is the progress like with regards to construction work and laying down lines for the metro rail?

The civil work of 6.3 km metro viaduct for the Priority Reach (Eastern Reach) i.e from Vastral Gam station to Apparel Park station has already been completed and Track laying work is under progress. The work on the six stations of this Priority Reach is under progress at various stages and Architectural finishing work is ongoing at 02 stations. We are hopeful that trial runs for this priority reach would commence by end of this year.

  • In phase 1 there is a part of line that will cross the old city area. What precautions are taken to safeguard the heritage value of that location?

Keeping in view the ASI protected monument act, we have planned our alignment which is more than 100 meters away from the protected monuments. Further, the impact assessment study has been done due to metro construction on these monuments which is in acceptable limits.

We are conscious about public safety during monsoon period. Therefore, the Metro rail contractors are advised to take extra precaution relating to traffic movement during rainy season. Also major road repair /surfacing work in coordination with AMC has been completed prior to the monsoon.

  • Have MEGA received its first set of coaches from South Korean rolling stock manufacturer Hyundai Rotem? Can you share some features of the coaches and how different will they be from other metro coaches?

The first set of the Ahmedabad Metro coaches will be received later this year. The coaches will feature facility for driverless operation using GOA-3 mode and broadly similar to HRC coaches used at Bengaluru. 0
Violet line Metro

New Delhi: On Friday a man commits suicide by jumped on tracks at Jangpura metro station. This majorly affected the violet Line Metro services. This is not the first suicide committed in the 2017. Later it was identified Mayur Sharma, aged 23, who jumped on the tracks at the Jangpura station. He was residing at Sadiq Nagar in South Delhi. He was preparing for competitive examination. His father is coast guard by profession. This is very painful for us that our youngsters who are bright future for our country are ending their life in such a way. The suicide rate is increasing  at Delhi Metro stations day by day.

More such Incident has occurred

On 1 March, 2018 a 30-year-old man committed suicide by jumping before a moving train at a Delhi Metro station at Chandni Chowk station.

On 6 February 2018, a 32-year-old man, who was allegedly attempting suicide at the Rohini West station of Delhi Metro.

There are such numbers of suicides cases coming out on daily basis. In India there was Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. Now the main question arises that only person who is committing suicide is responsible for such incidence or the family member our society. Supreme Court of India has also declared suicides as non- criminal action. Government has also facilitated direct help for mentally ill person.

Solution to reduce suicide rate at Metro platform:

Suicide at metro platform can be reducing by installing Platform Screen Door (PSD). Platform Screen Door must be install at all the Metro station. If PSD will be installed in all the Metro station then probability of suicides rate will decrease. At present Delhi Metro has installed PSD at Magenta, Airport, Pink line but there is also argent need for installing in all other existing line.

Uncertainty looms on running Mumbai Monorail despite of more coaches

Mumbai Monorail
Mumbai Monorail

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will get more coaches for the city transit project. But it is uncertain as to when the Mumbai Monorail will be made operational. MMRDA has already received six coaches out of 10 from LTSE – a consortium of Larsen & Toubro and Scomi Engineering.  The officials are pinning the delay on contractors who have not been able to deliver the spare parts.

MMRDA will receive two more coaches by December and by February the other two coaches too be delivered, informed the MMRDA official. The authority added the postponement is due to contractor’s inability to organize spare parts for the monorail on time.

The first phase of Mumbai Monorail was closed last year after fire broke out in November. Since then MMRDA has not started the operations. MMRDA stated that owing to non-availability of spare parts of RSTs, they have reduced the number of working trains to facilitate sustainable operation of the monorails.

But the delay is no way hindering MMRDA’s effort in starting the second phase of Mumbai Monorail. The officials though have not shared the tentative date to start the project. They will soon float tenders for the operations and maintenance for the monorail. MMRDA will evaluate the bidders and take call.

There are also negotiations going on between LTSE, MMRDA and current operators. LTSE has asked for new rates for trips shared MMRDA. As per the construction contract LTSE was to construct as well as operate Mumbai Monorail for first three years on a fixed trip rate. They are now asking for revised rate, a hike above the earlier rate fixed at Rs 4,000 per trip. LTSE, in a fresh bid want MMRDA to increase this rate and negotiations are on for the same.

MMRDA shared the data of the first phase where in the average ridership was 16,000 passengers on daily basis. They expect the figures to touch one lakh once both the stretches are made operational added MMRDA. A response from L&T is awaited.

How far women are safe in public transportation in India?

0
Women Safety in Public Transport
Women Safety in Public Transport
Transportation is also important part of society which facilitates people to work in their respective field without any hurdle. Urban transportation has made easy to convert our cities into smart city, smart way of life. Such movement has changed the way people live and travel. Transportation has facilitated the life of women in very large scale. Women safety has become one of the challenging issues for Transport Industries.

There is no doubt that transportation has played crucial role in human general life. As per 2011 India Census, numbers of working women in urban India who travel to work, 45 per cent of them go on foot to their workplaces, while only 27 per cent of men walk to their jobs and 22 per cent of women undertake the journey to work by bus, the corresponding figure for men is only 14 per cent.  But when it comes to women safety, the big question arises.

Does transport Industries provides women safety?

Women Safety in Public Transport_Reeta Shah_Metro Rail News July 2018
Women Safety in Public Transport by Reeta Shah published in Metro Rail News July 2018 (Vol. II, Issue 19)

At some extent all transport Industries have work for women safety. Installation of CCTV Cameras and Live GPS Tracking, Reserving First Coach for ladies in  Metro, Operating special Ladies Buses and dedicated cab fleet (She Taxi), Creation of Safety Apps (Himmat – Delhi Police), Separated sections for women in the buses and reserved seats, Pink buses by Up government, separate coach for women and men in all RTC buses in Andhra Pradesh.

According to National Crime Records Bureau of 2011, in every 51 minutes, a woman faces harassment or assault in India’s public spaces, Staggering numbers of reported and unreported cases of violence and harassment make transportation difficult and dangerous for women and girls, especially after dark.

We are living in such era where women have achieved highest level of success; even we can say that their achievement has been at larger scale than man. Then why women are not safe in such developing era?

Pune: Pune is ready to introduce two new routes for metro commuters. As Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved the preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for two new routes under Pune Metro Rail Project. The demand was put up by the leader of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Mr. Sunil Tingre.

After the approval by the City Development Committee, the proposal is forwarded to the standing committee. And the good news is that the standing committee has given its nod to the proposal.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) is asked to prepare the DPR for the project. Pune Municipal Corporation needs to see deeply in the project as the new route will connect Airport as well as need to think of the Hyperloop project or you can say trial track project.

“Work on the Vanaz-Ramwadi route is on and the area is growing heavily populated. There are a lot of IT companies coming up there, too. Considering this, we felt that the route should be given extensions on these two patches. Accordingly, we have decided to ask the Maha-Metro authorities to prepare the DPR, since they are already doing the work for the remaining patch. After the budget estimate and DPR is in place, further discussions will take place.” Chairman of standing committee Yogesh Mulik  said

The work on Vanaz-Ramwadi route is in progress and the new routes will connect Ramwadi to Wagholi and Pune International Airport.

“A formal presentation of the Metro route was given to corporators in September 2017. During the meeting, I had demanded that this route should further be connected to the airport and Wagholi, considering the traffic. The proposal has been approved by the standing committee and I am sure the process will be completed soon.” Tingre said

Expert committee gives consent to findings of SIA study at Sreekaryam

0
Light Metro Rail
Light Metro Rail System

Thiruvananthapuram: The proposed light metro project will now have a flyover at Sreekaryam. This is based on the findings of Social Impact Assessment study carried out to ascertain the need for the flyover. The state government has received necessary sanction for acquiring 1.343 hectares of land for the said project.

The flyover is one of the aspects of proposed Light Metro project. In order to evaluate the need for the project a seven-member expert team was formed. The panel was headed by former Professor of Sociology, University of Kerala, P.K. Bhaskaran Nair with the primary task of preparing Social Impact Assessment (SIA).

SIA was done by Centre for Advanced Research in Health and Human Behaviour (CARB). After public hearing on March 10 the report was handed over to district administration.

The panel has given its nod to the findings of the SIA study which states that flyover is needed to resolve traffic congestion issues at the Sreekaryam junction. Further the committee has observed that a four-lane road too will not help in easing traffic situation at the location.

The report added that the land requirement is minimal and there is no other alternative to the land that has been identified for the flyover.

The expert panel however has stressed for the need to have minimal impact on people during land acquisition. They have asked authorities to have a good rehabilitation plan for those who will be affected. The panel has also asked to employ latest technology to reduce impact on houses and building during demolition drive.

The authorities have also been advised to relocate the market at the junction to a convenient place.

Compensation to be offered

Committee recommended that compensation and counselling be offered to those displaced at immediate basis. It has also been suggested to identify space for displaced traders and be lenient to those who have taken loans from financial agency for business.

The member of expert committee comprised of:

  • Thara Bhai, former Professor, Department of Sociology, Madurai Kamaraj University
  • Former deputy Collectors – S. Indukaladharan and S. Sambhudevan Nair
  • Councillors V.S. Lathakumari and K.S. Sheela,
  • Anand Elamon, Chief General Manager, Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation Limited

As per sources the district administration will be submitting evaluation report to the government soon.

Findings of SIA study

The SIA study is a mandatory need as per the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.

As per the study:

  • 27% of land belong to one owner
  • 46% under joint ownership
  • 3% fall in the ambit of a trust, religious groups or community

At the land identified for the project there are 269 buildings out of 280 that are permanent and destroying them would lead to substantial financial loss to the owners.

The physical demarcation of the land was concluded by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) that had designed the 480-m four-lane flyover.

Revenue department on the other hand has received a go-ahead from government to negotiate land purchase. Funds for the said project will come from KIIFB.
