Chennai Metro | All metro trains yet to be operated automatically

Chennai: The Chennai metro operates across the city’s vein for last three years. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is yet to run the metro trains services on automatic mode.

Metro train run on two modes – the automatic train operation (ATO) and the automatic train protection (ATP). When a train is operated via ATO, all that is operator is required is to close the door. All the operations of the train are automatic and managed from a centralized operations control centre.

On the other hand when trains are run on ATP mode, all operation is manual. During the emergency the system takes over. Those operating the train use the master console and control the brakes and traction systems in non-peak hours. The personnel at the operation control center are only monitoring the operation.

CMRL is using manual mode in order to train the operators, as per the official.

A metro official said that they use ATP mode in the non-peak hours.

The manual mode is used to equip train operators to use master controller (the console of the train) in case there is an emergency.

The official added that they use automatic mode during peak hours in order to maintain frequency of trains entered into the operating system. Currently, CMRL has 88 train operators trained and certified by them.

The employment of manual mode is leading to several technical glitches. These include non-syncing of platform screen doors (PSD) of the train door in the underground Chennai metro station. The metro train either stop before time or behind the station – not syncing with the time and stoppage/destination. The operators have to sync the doors by moving the train backward or forward.

CMRL officials however, assert that the non-syncing of door has nothing to do with door operator’s skill. It depends on the signalling system.

The Chennai Metro official shared, that the if the train operator applies more brake or traction then necessary during the ATP mode, the train system will take care. This is so because it comes in protection more with negligible chance of error.

For phase 2 project CMRL is aiming to operate driverless trains for the 107.55km stretch.

Delhi Metro | Finally Arvind Kejriwal ready to discuss on DMRC Phase-IV with Hardeep S Puri

0

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday met Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. They discussed several issues, including the proposed Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Phase-IV. The approval for the DMRC Phase-IV has been pending with the Delhi government.

In February 2016, the Aam Aadmi Party government had given an in-principal nod for the construction of Phase IV project, but the Delhi Cabinet is taking time to take its final decision.

Kejriwal had said there were “issues of financial viability” on some of the routes falling under the Phase IV project. The Delhi Finance department had also made objections on some routes which may not be financially viable. The report stated that however, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is not in agreement with the observations of the finance department as the 22-km long Tughlakabad Aerocity line is not included in it.

In May this year, Puri had said: “the Centre would take a decision on the execution of the much-awaited metro’s Phase-IV project if something was lacking on the Delhi government’s side.”

If the plan is successfully executed, it would be the first time in Delhi metro projects that the central government and Delhi government are equal shareholders.

The areas that will be covered by the proposed lines — Burari, Yamuna Vihar, Paschim Vihar, Rohini East, Mukarba Chowk and Andrews Ganj — house a large migrant population, the support of which played a major role in AAP’s rise to power.

Bangalore Metro | BMRC planning questioned over land acquisition

0

Bengaluru: With no headway in land acquisition, Bangalore Metro officials seek bids from contractors. As per sources, three private firms are reportedly investing 100 crore each for constructing Outer Ring Road (ORR) of the metro network. These investors are investing with the hope of early completion of the work.

This, after Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) showed no headway with regards to land acquisition. With this delay questions are raised on planning capabilities of metro body.

BMRCL has to acquire around 35,000 square meter of land for the for the 18-km line between the Central Silk Board and KR Puram (along the ORR) to materialise. A large portion of land is needed to construct the stations with the viaducts to come up over the road medians.

The metro officials have shared that they have submitted a preliminary notification to the government for acquiring 35,000 square meters of land. They are waiting for necessary nod from the government officials.

The approval from government is the foremost step as part the extensive bureaucratic process. There are four more steps to be followed by the BMRCL to get possession of land for the project. This process is likely to take a long time of around 6 months as BMRCL will need – publishing the land requirement in the official gazette, calling for objections as well as paying compensation.

As per normal procedure acquiring land is important for contractors to start work. Looking at the delay transport utility had started bidding for civil works.

Sanjeev Dyamannavar, urban mobility activist who is not happy with the progress questioned BMRCL. He stated that there is no point in awarding contracts if contractors are not handed over the land. Sanjeev further added that acquiring land and bidding work should go simultaneously with BMRCL getting sufficient financial support.

ORR line needs very small land acquisition compared to other Namma Metro projects. BMRCL in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) had earlier projected their requirement of around 15,179 sqm. But now the Bangalore Metro officials have doubled their requirement from the original requirement.

In the DPR that was drafted in 2016, stated that no land will be needed for the viaduct between the Central Silk Board and KR Puram stations. This was proposed as the construction will be on the median of the ring road. The land required for the Central Silk Board and KR Puram stations has already been acquired in Phase-2 of Bangalore Metro Rail Project.

The DPR also highlighted that the alignment and the location of the stations chiefly stay inside the government land and the road median. It is clearly mentioned in DPR that the stations are located above the carriageway and only the entry-exit structure at every stations requires 10m x 80m land on both sides. This has helped in minimizing the land prerequisite for this plan.
