Hyderabad: It is time to pat Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL)’s back. The metro body has managed to encourage more commuters take metro rail. As per the latest release, over 1.5 lakh people travelled in Hyderabad Metro in one single day. This is one major feet by the metro body.

Their earlier record stated that over 92,000 metro commuters took this mass transit system in one single day. With the figures crossing over a lakh for a day, things are definitely looking upbeat for the metro body.

In a press release by the HMRL, NVS Reddy, managing director sharing the data informed that 580 trips were made against the daily 520 trips.

Reddy also adds that a significant progress was seen as users are now shifting from tokens to smart cards. As per the data the number of people using smart cards has gone up to 50%.

The release stated that increased patronage was attributed to better connectivity to Metro stations, availability of rent a bicycle /two- wheeler services at 15 Metro stations.

Another reason that led to an increase in patronage was availability of electric vehicles at Miyapur Metro station. It was in November last year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 30-km stretch between Miyapur and Nagole. The stretch has 24 metro stations. This stretch is part of the planned 72 km long elevated metro stretch.

In September, the Ameerpet-LB Nagar section is likely to be operational. Work on this stretch is almost complete and trials are going on. Looking at the progress, one expects this line to open for public soon.

With this stretch becoming functional, HMRL is expecting the daily ridership to increase. Commuters getting easy access to metro near their destination will frequently travel via this medium.

New Delhi:  There is good news for students and elderly commuters travelling in Metro, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will provide Concessional Passes to them. According to the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee of Delhi Metro, the increase in rent in January 2019 will no longer be increased. Not only this, there is also preparation to give concessional passes to the students and the elderly who travel in the metro. Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that if the revenue of the metro is good then I do not think there is a need to increase the rent next year. On Monday, he had come to meet the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with a metro building from South Campus for a flagship section of 8.10 km of Lajpat Nagar.

Hardeep Singh Puri said that when he took over as the minister, the first Metro fare determination committee was formed. Since the rent was not increased for 9 years, the maximum fare was increased simultaneously. He said that passenger hours after the increase in the fares of the metro but now the number of passengers in the metro is also increasing and the revenue also increased. If the revenue of the metro is good then there is no need to increase the rent in 2019. He said that in collaboration with the Chief Minister, we are working to make Delhi’s better in world-class transportation system.

Concessional Passes for students:

He said that instead of increasing the rent, we are considering how to get rid of the students who are more concerned about the increase in rent. For this, the DMRC has asked the students and the elderly to create a technical-based system, which allows the passengers to be classified as rentals. Let’s say that on the recommendation of the rent assessment committee last year, the fare of the metro has increased twice in the interval of six months. After that the number of frequent travelers has decreased. But now DMRC claims that the number of passengers has increased from 26 lakhs per day to 28 lakhs a day for almost a month.

What is the recommendation of the Fare Fixation Committee?

The Fourth Rental Committee for Metro has increased the metro fare twice in the year 2017. Along with that, every year from 01 January 2019, every slab of the rent was recommended to increase the maximum rent of 7 percent. It will continue to grow every year until the next hire scheduling committee is formed. In order to fix the metro fare, the rent assessment committee should be formed every three years.

New Delhi: If you are passing or moving in or out of Delhi Metro Station, beware of women shouting ‘help’. These women might just be thieves in disguise. In what is seen as a shocking incident, two women shouted help and they ended up robbing men who came forward to help them. The entire incident took place near of the Delhi Metro Stations.

The police have nabbed the accused who are identified as Muskan (25) and Sweety (24). These two used charm select few people and then rob them of their belongings and cask.

Police arrested these two accused near Moolchand Metro Station in Delhi. Both of them were nabbed for allegedly looting men on pretext of asking for help. They would lure then, once in their net they would steal all that the helper had.

The incident came to light on August 4 at around 9.30 pm. Police patrolling near Moolchand Metro station spotted one person running behind two women.

Sensing suspicion, police jumped into action and managed to nab both the women. Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast), Chinmoy Biswal shared with media persons that they intercepted them and nabbed on time.

During interrogation the man who said that he was slapped and robbed by Sweety and Muskan. Police recovered the purse and both women accused were arrested added DCP Biswal.

The complainant during the investigation shared that he was on his way home on his motorcycle. When he reached near the Delhi metro station at around 9.30pm he was altered by two women shouting for ‘help’.

When the complainant stopped to help, he was taken aback with Muskan slapping him. He fell down from his bike. Sweety took advantage of the situation and ended up taking his purse. The two then started running towards Lajpat Nagar as per DCP.

Both the accused during interrogation confided that they were illiterate.

Sweety shared that she is living separately from her husband and divorce proceedings are pending. Muskan on the other hand is a widow.

The accused said that they resorted to robbing people near Delhi Metro to earn their livelihood. Their scheme would either be shouting for ‘help’ or to lure victims. Both of them worked in well co-ordinated manner. While one would ask for help or lure the victim, the other would come from behind and rob men. They would then flea from the spot.

The two of them would also threaten men that if they filed a complaint, they would file false complaint against them.

Sweety and Muskan have robbed around six men in last three months. As per police, they two got away as most would not report the crime owing to social stigma.

Police shared another incident where a 67-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly burglary Rs. 75,000 in Chanakyapuri. The accused stole money from exhibitor’s purse during a bridal exhibition.

She was spotted by the hotel security guard while she was counting money. The guard informed exhibitors and police was later informed and subsequently arrested.

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) finally offers respite to metro commuters. BMRCL has decided to permit commuters to recharge smart cards using Paytm application. This move comes after uproar from commuters who found it difficult to recharge their cards.

This move has been welcomed by metro commuters who were facing problem for a long time. With Paytm interface, riders will be able to save time and reach destination earlier.

Commuters will be able to use Paytm app to recharge smart cards and also at major BMTC bus stations as well.

The problem came to limelight when Deccan Chronicle reported in its paper the plight of commuters. Many shared that they had to stand in serpentine queues to recharge their smart cards. This was happening owing to shortage of PoS swiping machines at most metro stations.

Metro commuters were dissuaded using smart cards and were willing to buy tickets instead. They felt that its best to buy tickets as it was faster than recharging cards.

It was after this news item that BMRCL was alerted and they decided to look for alternative method.

Commuters are happy with the move as they can now use online application to recharge the card.

Ironically, BMRCL purpose of introducing smart card was to encourage people to travel cashless. Using smart card would mean hassle-free travel. In fact, 60% commuters ended up using smart card for daily commute.

While BMRCL has allowed Paytm application of online payment, commuters want more options. They share that getting recharge at BMTC bus stations would mean standing in long queues. BMRCL should widen the online application interface to ease commuters woes.

A senior BMRCL official informs that Paytm App facility recharge will be introduced for commuters in few days. The metro officials are discussing the problem with bank officials to facilitate online payment option.

The officials also requested that commuters should not compare two metro bodies in different cities. He added that they are working towards bringing out a solution to the problem. BMRCL will always want to offer easy, comfortable and feel good travel.

Gurugram: Old Gurugram will soon be connected with metro rail network. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is expected to initiate work on connecting Old Gurugram with metro network. Haryana government to wants to speed up extension work in order to reduce traffic jams in peak traffic hours.

The state government aims to avoid traffic jams in urban localities of Gurugram. Metro connectivity is a long due for people residing in Old Gurugram. The demand has been pending for years now.

Old Gurugram needs a robust public transport system. People residing here have to look for other public transport systems. These include – personal mode of transport, auto rickshaw to cycling to reach nearby metro station.

The traffic problem is at peak at key roads connecting Old Gurugram to new one. As per residents starting from 8 am to 11 am and from 5 pm to 9 pm which is peak office hours, chokes them. It is during these timings traffic jams are most likely.

DMRC has been asked to connect Old Gurugram with new one with metro services. The focus is to avoid traffic snarls that irk the residents and commuters.

The state government is expected to submit Detailed Project Report to the DMRC for the reason by October. Once the DPR is given, DMRC will initiate funding process, followed by groundwork.

Gurugram residents on the other want this project to turn into a reality. Many office goers want the traffic situation to ease out and some solution worked out.

Commuters find it hard to drive all the way to HUDA City Central Metro station from Old Gurugram. It takes a long time to reach the destination owing to serpentine queue of cars on the roads.

Residents are hoping that state government and DMRC works out a plan and begin working on the project. People want breather from the daily traffic problem and traffic jams.

Services on the Lajpat Nagar-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of the Delhi Metro’s Pink Line commenced from Monday. The line was flagged off jointly by Minister of State (Independent Charge), Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This network of metro is part of 59 km-long Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor (Pink Line) which falls under the Phase-III network of DMRC.

Delhi: Delhi Metro will soon be one of the most sustainable modes of transport in the country. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will soon switch to using green power. India’s biggest metro rail system will get its electricity supply from Rewa Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh.

The solar park is all set to begin supplying electricity to DMRC. This news comes in less than a year and a half with the 750 MW project making waves in the market. The solar project promises to sell electric power at than INR 3 (4 US cents) per unit. The Rewa project will in due course meet 90% of the power requisite of the Delhi Metro.

The solar project that created history of sorts in renewable energy is the country is now operation.

As reported earlier that the bidding of Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Park in February 2017 culminated in record low solar tariffs. These were the lowest possible ever awarded to a solar project in India during the bidding procedure at that time.

The park has started generating power from July onwards. This will be purchased by DMRC for running the metros in the city.

As per the current capacity of solar plant, Rewa is producing 10MW of electricity. It is likely that DMRC, two months down the line will start buying green power at INR 2.97 per unit.

DMRC is one of the top customers for the project. The other major customer is the state of Madhya Pradesh through the MP Power Management Co. Ltd.

Manu Srivastava, Principal Secretary and Commissioner, New and Renewable Energy Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, and Managing Director of RUMSL shares with indiaclimatedialogue.net  – “This is probably the first large-scale solar project in India that is supplying power to an institutional customer. It is accessible to an inter-state open customer, which is DMRC in this case.”

Srivastava further added,  “The idea is that instead of imposing RPO (renewable purchase obligation) on discoms (electricity distribution companies) that are mostly in the red and forcing them to buy renewable power, why not extend it to willing customers who want to readily buy the cheaper power, which is in their own commercial interest?”

Madhya Pradesh looking at the future viability green power consumption aims to establish slew of solar parks. These will have installed capacity of an additional 1.5 GW. Another institutional customer, the Indian Railways is expected to be one of its top clients.

In order to ensure uninterrupted power supply to DMRC, optimum scheduling has been done on days without optimum sun. In this, the solar plant will supply energy to DMRC on a privileged basis to facilitate meeting its supply requirement and then cater to state’s utility.

The 750MW solar project is among the world’s largest single-site solar park. It will help in savings of INR 46 billion for Madhya Pradesh’s power utilities in the next 25 years. For DMRC it will help the metro rail corporation INR 14 billion.

As per the MP government, this green power project will have huge environmental impact. It is result in carbon emission savings and will be equal to planting 26 million trees.

Bangalore Metro | Bus stops to have metro card top-up machines

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) plans to set up automated top-up machines at key places in the city. This moves comes in wake of customers complain regarding long queues at to-up travel card counter. To ease the problem, BMRCL plans to have top-up machines at various places including bus stops.

Based on the current data, 60 % commuters use ‘Smart Card’ or ‘Varshik Card’. This card offers 15% discount to rider on each trip.

Ajay Seth, BMCRL’s managing director shares that the to-up automated machines to be kept on places with high footfall rates.

Seth adds that they plan to put the automated top-up machines at TTMC centres of BMTC, prominent banks as well as metro stations. They are also considering other places where these machines can be placed.

The MD however, did not give a time frame as to when these machines will be installed.

From February this year, BMCRL had allowed to increase the storage value on the card. At Metro stations if top-up facility is used, then commuters can deposit around Rs 3,000. If the same is done online, then they can add up to Rs 2,500.

Another problem encountered is the ticket-vending machines at metro stations. Off late they have been functioning erratically. Metro officials are dependent on external agencies to mend and rectify the error. Post demonetisation, the machines need calibration as per Bangalore Metro official.

In terms of further development, BMRCL has had a meeting with delegates from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The delegation was there in the city.

Seth informs that they had a dialogue with the delegates of JICA. Together they discussed the possibility of long term JICA financing for metro projects in the city.

JICA has also given funds for Phase-1 and Seth explored the chances of them funding Phase-II as well. As per records, JICA has given Rs 4,000 crore out for the 42.3 km Phase-I project whose total outlay is 13,845 crores.

New Delhi:  On 6 August Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) inaugurated the Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus to Lajpat Nagar section on the Pink Line. The Executive Director of Corporate Communications, DMRC, Anuj Daya said that 8.10-km long route will be flagged off by  The Minister of State (Independent Charge), Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The service on Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus -Lajpat Nagar section of Delhi Metro’s Pink line was today flagged off by Union Minister Hardeep Puri and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwa. Delhi Metro’s new service will link four major shopping destinations of the city. This section from Lajpat Nagar to Sir Vishweshwaraiah Moti Bagh will have the six stations viz. Vishweshwaraih Moti Bagh, Bhikaji Cama Place, Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar. It also has two interchange stations at INA and Lajpat Nagar.

About Pink line corridor:

  • The services for commuters for pink line will began from 1 Pm.
  • This stretch will provide great facility for commuters who usually like to go for shopping i.e, Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar.
  • This streatch consist both elevated as well as underground station, Sir Vishwesaraiya Moti Bagh is elevated whereas Bhikaji Kama Place, INA, Sarojini Nagar, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar are underground stations.
  • There will be total 23 number of trains will run on Delhi metro pink line’s new corridor.

All the six stations of new corridor of Delhi Pink line metro are approved from Green building Council of India. After the extension of this line, the total network of Metro the city has expanded to 296 Km through 214 stations.

The Pink Line’s section flagged off via remote from Metro Bhawan at 11.30 am. This was open for passengers from 1 pm onwards from 6 July onward. The stretch consists total six number of stations which includes two interchange stations one at  Lajpat Nagar and another at INA.

Dayal also mention that this new section would also shrink travel time for commuters by up to 20 minutes.

Kolkata: Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (KMRCL) plans microsurgery. This is to remove key hurdle of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that East-West Metro corridor encountered. The Kolkata Metro officials are using international method to remove the hurdle.

The metro officials are facing trouble from the Esplanade to Sealdah stretch. They now plan to employ Australian tunnelling method to remove the hurdle. Five steel H-Piles blocking the route just beyond Esplanade station will be manually removed.

Parashuram Singh, managing director, KMRCL explains that a 40m-long and 3m-wide pilot tunnel will be manually dug linking the two tunnels that the TBMs will excavate. To avoid the earth from caving in, engineers will employ a technique called Fore-poling. As the excavation progresses, sharp metal poles will be employed to form a cover. The H-piles will then be cut by the workers.

Four more such piles will be cut through to clear the hurdle ads Singh.

By middle of August work will begin and continue for three months. Metro officials inform that two TBMs that have by now been lowered underground at the Esplanade station site can commence work by the October end. The officials believe this will aid in meeting the projected June 2021 deadline for the complete 16.6km Kolkata metro project.

Interestingly, the H-Piles date back to the late 70s and early 80s. This was when the when the North-South Esplanade Metro Railway station was being built.  It was completed using conventional top-down cut-and-cover technique.

Singh assures that work is going on at good pace. They are able to meet deadlines. A trial run of also carried out on the east-bound line between Salt Lake Sector V and Salt Lake stadium. It was also first full trial run for the east-bound stretch. For west-bound line a full run was conducted previously.

Singh also shares that platform screen doors material has come. Workers have begun installing the doors too.

Delhi Metro | DMRC awaits state government approval for Phase-IV projects

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) planned for Phase-IV to provide last mile connectivity for the new housing hubs in the NCR. Whose aim is to   complete the projects by 2022. The work on this project was likely to start in 2017. But project is still waiting for Delhi’s government approval.

Union Minister Hardeep Sing Puri said that the approval for Delhi Metro’s phase-IV was of “utmost importance.” The Centre was mulling bringing on board foreign companies to provide financial aid to the Delhi government, for the project.

He further added that despite of several reminders, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has not been available for a discussion regarding the road block that the proposal has hit.

He also said that, “I have been trying to meet Mr. Kejriwal over this issue for a very long time, but every time the meeting is being delayed for one reason or another. Now the Delhi government is saying that the delay is over financial matters. In order to provide financial aid to the State government, we can also help them take a loan from companies abroad. I will try and meet him next week to convince him. The Delhi Metro’s phase-IV is of utmost significance and it is important that the proposal is approved.”

The central government given the in-principle approval for phase-IV prjects. But still seeking state government approval. Now two years had over but Delhi government is not responding for the projects.

Mr. Puri referring to the deadlock over the project, in March this year had said that the Centre will take a “decision” if the Delhi government fails to take one.

About Phase- IV projects:

The phase-IV consists 104-kilometre network proposed in this phase is expected to cater to 1.5 million passengers daily.

The 104 Km extension includes different station viz. Rithala to Narela (21 km), Inderlok to Indraprastha (12 km), Tughlakabad to Aerocity (20 km),Lajpat Nagar to Saket G-Block (8 km), Janakpuri to RK Ashram (28 km), Mukundpur to Maujpur (12 km) ,HUDA City Centre to Gurgaon Railway Station (29 km) ,IFFCO Chowk to Dwarka Sector 21 (12.5 km), Gurgaon Railway Station to Palam Vihar (23 km)

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has seeking for approval from state government in two phases. In the first phase, the DMRC is seeking an approval for the Mukundpur-Maujpur, the Tughlakabad – Terminal 1 and the Janakpuri (West)-RK Ashram sections. In the second phase, the Rithala–Narela, the Inderlok–Indraprastha and the Lajpat Nagar–Saket G-Block sections can be considered.

Concessional passes:

Mr. Puri also mentioned about the concessional passes for students and senior citizens is being considered.

He said, “We are committed to the proposal and once the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) tells us that the required technology is ready, we can consider it. We can even think of linking Aadhaar to make it easier to identify.”
