HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) and L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) are set to complete the entire Corridor by July 2019. Corridor III will connect Nagole to Raidurg via Hitech City.

Currently, metro rail services are being run from Nagole to Ameerpet normally and from Ameerpet to HiTec City. the operations are run on twin tracks since the line up to Raidurg is still under construction and the ‘reversal’ at the HiTec City.

‘reversal’ will be ready soon, considering the logistics involved in running an extra train from Begumpet metro station towards HiTec City to keep up the frequency, discussions are on to make the entire route ready for more efficient services till the Mindspace Junction where the terminal station is getting completed said NVS Reddy, MD, HMRL

EV charging

a few days ago, Shri Arvind Kumar, Municipal Administration & Urban Development Secretary inaugurated an electric vehicle charging facility at Begumpet, the eighth across various metro rail stations by Fortum, a Finnish government-owned company which has an agreement with HMR to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging network across the project.

“This is a great step by HMR and within an hour, a car can be charged while citizens travel by the metro. Depending on the demand, we can step up the facility towards encouraging non-polluting electric vehicles,” said Mr. Kumar, who also threw open an automatic parking facility by ‘Park Hyderabad’ at the station.

Currently, EV services are free and charges to be decided soon could be ₹15 per unit for charging 40-60 minutes for a vehicle for travel up to 140 km Mr

This comes to ₹1-1.80 per km and the rates could further reduce with more demand.

Fortum has 40 EV stations across the country, 36 in the capital (26 at metro rail stations itself) whereas there are just two each at Delhi and Mumbai.

Parking plan

Integrated smart parking system operational at 24 stations between Miyapur-Ameerpet-Nagole will soon be available on a mobile app providing real time information about parking availability for bikes and cars for about 4,000 two-wheeler bays and 250 four-wheeler bays from 6.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.

Digital payments can be made and it will be tied up with L&TMRH run parking bays, he said.

While regular parking charges are ₹3 for bikes and ₹8 for cars per hour, under the Park Hyderabad Citizen mobile app, the charges will be ₹5 for two hours to ₹30 for 15 hours.

Noida Metro stood still due to non-payment of security personnel

NOIDA (Metro Rail News): Noida Metro services came to a standstill between Noida and Greater Noida during peak hours on Wednesday and leaving several commuters stranded.

The Security personnel deployed at the Aqua line metro, protest against the non-payment of salaries by their security agency and halted their services of Metro stations’ security frisking areas.

To add to the woes of the passengers, the services were stopped, stretching over two hours, leaving them to look for other modes of transportation. 

Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary provide security of the Aqua Line stations and the Ironman Security Services provide general security and frisking of the passenger. The security staff form these services struck from work in to demonstrate their agony of non-repayment of salaries from 6 am to 8 am. This time footfalls in the metro are the highest due to work hours. 

Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) officials said The matter has been taken seriously and is considered a lapse of security. The services were put to a stop at the Sector 81, 83, 101, 137 and NSEZ Metro stations. The staff of the private security were not at their positions and refused to carry out their duties that caused a ruckus at the metro stations. Arguments broke out between the guards and passengers due to the inconvenience. 

With no one at the check posts, passengers could not access the metro and had to resort to other modes of transport.  The staff had not given a prior notice with regard to the strike and hence all were taken by surprise.

“Adequate action will be taken against the staff that put a stop to their services and causes inconvenience to the passengers,” said officials.

If such an incident occurs so that NMRC is bound to be disqualified the security agencies. The security agency assured that such an incident will not be repeated as they will pay their staff their salaries by the seventh of every month. The agency has submitted an unconditional apology regretting the inconvenience and embarrassment caused to the NMRC. 

The Aqua Line was opened to the public on January 26 this year, connecting Noida and Greater Noida. There are around 14,000 passengers daily, travelling a stretch of  29.

Delhi Metro’s Yellow line Services Restored after 4-hour disruption

New Delhi (Metro Rail News): Normal services were restored on Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line on Tuesday nearly four hours after a technical glitch on a section of the corridor left thousands of commuters stranded.

According to the officials, The train services were hit around 9.32 am due to a breakdown of the overhead wire (OHE) at Sultanpur station, leading to tripping of power supply in the section.

There was no train movement between Sultanpur and Qutub Minar stations. Chhattarpur station falls between Sultanpur and Qutub Minar. In Rush-hour commuters were left hassled as trains were temporarily run in two loops — between Huda City Centre and Sultanpur and between Samaypur Badli and Qutub Minar.

Two maintenance teams of DMRC technicians, comprising 16 officials, worked to rectify the problem and trains were initially run at a restricted speed between Chhattarpur and Qutub Minar stations.

Nearly three-and-a-half hours later, end-to-end services were partially restored, with trains plying between Qutub Minar and Sultanpur stations with a lower frequency and in another 30 minutes, normal services resumed.

Delhi Metro constantly updated the status of the disruption and rectification on its social media platforms to inform commuters.

“Normal services have now resumed. Inconvenience is regretted. Please allow for some extra time in your commute till the bunching of trains eases,” the DMRC said in a tweet.

The 48.8 km-long Yellow Line has 37 stations and has an average daily ridership of about 7 to 8 lakh.

Kochi Metro Phase II work likely to commence by Year End

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): Social Impact Study for the Phase II expansion of the Metro line from Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad completed by The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL).

Phase II Expansion of Kochi Metro, preliminary notification and detailed survey work for preparing sketches for land acquisition are underway.

The revised detailed project report (DPR) for kochi metro Phase II has been submitted to the Central Government for approval. The cost of the project saw de-escalation in the revised DPR. Instead of the earlier project cost of Rs. 2,557 crore, the revised cost is `1,957 crore. The state government has already given administrative sanction for the revised DPR.

The KMRL plans to acquire 2.8630 hectares along the Stadium-Infopark-Kakkanad stretch. Out of the total land to be acquired, 0.72 hectares is government land. Land belonging to 402 individuals will be taken over for the project.

KMRL Managing Director A P M Mohammed Hanish said “The draft declaration for land acquisition is expected to be published soon. The KMRL is working in tandem with the district administration to speed up acquisition proceedings. If the land acquisition will get over by October/November, KMRL is hopeful of launching the preparatory work for Kakkanad extension by December 2019,”.

The KMRL chief said the agency is awaiting Central Government sanction for the Phase II. “We hope the administrative sanction will be given by the new Union Government by June or July,” he said. The state government had already accorded administrative sanction for widening the Seaport-Airport Road from Kakkanad Collectorate Junction to Infopark Expressway entrance for a length of 2.5 km into a four-lane stretch. “Tender process for awarding the contract is in the final stages,” said Hanish.

The widening of the Seaport-Airport Road is essential to carry out civil works of Kochi Metro along the Collectorate and Infopark stretch as the vehicular traffic is very high on this road. Hence, the barricading of the road for Metro work is not possible without widening.

“The alignment of Phase II passes through the Seaport Road from Kakkanad Collectorate Junction to Infopark Expressway entrance and widening of this stretch is critical for the implementation of Phase II,” said a KMRL officer.

Two New Metro line to connect Noida and Greater Noida to Delhi

NOIDA (Metro Rail News): The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) is planning for at least two new Metro line to connect its area to Delhi to ensure a smooth ride for commuters and to enhance connectivity.

The proposed plan is to extend the Delhi Metro Blue Line from Noida City Centre to linked with Line 8 (Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden) of DMRC’s Phase-III by a 16.5-km stretch connecting Sector-143 and Kalindi Kunj and Okhla Bird Sanctuary stations. This extension will give commuters two options — Magenta line to Kalindi Kunj and Blue line to Mayur Vihar.

A second proposal is to build a high-speed Metro corridor via Badarpur, Faridabad. This 66-km high-speed link will run parallel to the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) at Bodaki and connect to Badarpur station, Delhi and Gurugram at IGI international airport.

Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) is studying the feasibility of a Metro project connecting Noida’s Aqua Line from Sector 71, which will serve as an interchange station with Greater Noida west’s Gaur City Square in Sector 2. This line will then be extended to Knowledge Park-V (KP-V) in Greater Noida.

It will consist of a 15-km line, which will be extended to Bodaki village in Greater Noida. Finally, Bodaki will be connected with Noida City Centre via stations at Pari Chowk and Noida sectors-147, 143, 85, 101 and 50, among others. This Metro project, which was proposed in 2015 and was to become operational by 2021 had been stalled in 2017 because the route was not economically viable, considering the low population in the area. With Greater Noida west becoming a hub of multi-storied housing complexes, the authority has decided to revisit the project.

As per the report of GNIDA officials, all proposals are likely to be taken to an upcoming board meeting of Greater Noida Authority on May 31 before being forwarded to the UP Govt for further action including preparing of detailed project reports and pattern for funding.

Shir Narendra Bhooshan, CEO, GNIDA said that On receiving the board’s go ahead, we will authorize NMRC to study the feasibility and viability of the projects. “The aim for the Metro network expansions is to put into place a holistic and comprehensive network of public transport with optimum connectivity to cater to a large number of commuters.”

MSEDCL ask MMRDA to Ensure Metro work doesn’t damage power cables

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to ensure that power cables are not damaged owing to the ongoing Metro works during the monsoon asked by The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) recently.

MMRDA is the executive authority for most Metro projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Some areas which are under construction for Metro-4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavali) and Metro-6 (Swami Samarth Nagar-Vikhroli) fall under the jurisdiction of MSEDCL, which supplies power to Mulund, Bhandup, Thane, Navi Mumbai, apart from the rest of the state.

The state discom has also asked its field officials to co-ordinate with the Metro authority to ensure all work related to shifting of power cables is undertaken before the monsoon.


A senior official said from the Thane circle of MSEDCL that We have had meetings with the MMRDA. We have asked them to identify the cables that need to be shifted and to undertake the same on an urgent basis,”

MSDECL’s move comes against the backdrop of complaints of power cuts in areas like Mulund and Thane in April 2019. The state discom had blamed the ongoing Metro works for the same. “We are looking at the damages and shifting of cables regularly.” said PS Patil, chief public relations officer, MSEDCL

However, shifting of utilities is being done carefully to avoid any damage. Mr. Dilip Kawathkar, joint projects director, MMRDA said “Utility investigation is being carried out through trial trenches at every site where we undertake excavation. In case, a utility is required to be shifted, the owner of the utility is approached for consent. If it’s not to be shifted, we do excavation carefully by avoiding any damage,”

Currently, there are six Metro projects under construction in the city. In 2018, when only three lines were under-construction, the civic body had found 45 spots where drains were damaged.

In a review meeting in April, the civic body had also asked its officials to coordinate with the MMRDA and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC), and discuss an action plan to prevent waterlogging and flooding caused by choked drains. MMRC is executing the fully-underground Metro-3 corridor (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz).

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): The Chennai Metro Rail started its services in the city four years back and 3.81 crore people have used the service till now. 

According to the press release “Since the opening of the 45 km long last leg of Phase-1 between AG-DMS and Washermenpet was opened in February 2019, the footfall of passengers had gone up drastically. So far, a total of 3,81,03,799 passengers have travelled in Metro rail services between June 29, 2015, and May 14, 2019.

Official Said that the Availability of parking space at Metro stations and launch of many last miles connectivity like share auto and share taxi services has helped in an increase the patronage. Soon, all 32 Metro stations will have these facilities.

From January 2019 to May 14, 2019 around one crore commuters travelled by Metro rail.

January 2018 to December 2018 saw the maximum number of 1.43 crore passengers travel by phase 1 of Metro rail services.

On April 26, Metro rail services saw an all-time high as the ridership touched to a mark of 1,02,790 passengers on a single day.

AGARA (Metro Rail News): Agra is all set to get an intra-city metro connectivity makeover.
The city famous places like Taj Mahal, Agra Fort etc. will be connected through a world-class public transport system, providing respite from traffic congestion not only to its residents but also the almost 2 crore tourists.

The Union and state governments would each provide 20% equity, amounting to Rs 1466.26 crore, for the project, the rest of the money would be raised through bilateral or multilateral loans. Talks with prospective lenders are going to begin soon, Keshav says—the UP government cleared the decks for the project when it allocated Rs 175 crore under the head in its Budget in February this year.

The Agra Metro project was necessitated by the rapid growth in size and population that the city has witnessed in recent decades. The third most populous city of Uttar Pradesh, Agra’s population grew from 5.9 lakh in 1971 to 15.9 lakh in 2011—it is estimated to be 24 lakh at present. In terms of size, the Agra Development Authority’s geographical area expanded from 61.8 sq km in 1971 to 520.2 sq km in 2008.

Being a part of the Golden Triangle tourist circuit along with Delhi and Jaipur and home to three UNESCO world heritage sites – the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri—Agra draws vast numbers of tourists, both domestic and international, every year. While getting to see a monument like the Taj is a dream come true for visitors, traversing Agra’s congested streets can often be a nightmare. The lack of a modern and efficient means of public transport is thus felt alike by the city’s residents and tourists, who have to reckon with traffic congestion, pollution, parking woes, and accidents.

Keshav accepts it would be a challenge to get a project of such scale executed in the congested and densely populated city, especially since stress is being laid on the beauty of its monuments not being impacted. “Our design team is working to ensure that the Metro project does not tarnish the Taj Mahal in any way,” he says, adding that work on both the corridors would run simultaneously and are expected to be complete at around the same time.
