Three Metrolite corridors proposed for Bengaluru

The Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Ltd prepare a Comprehensive Mobility Plan for three Metrolite corridors under Phase 3 of Namma Metro which are Magadi Road Toll Gate to Kadabagere (13km), Whitefield – Domlur (16km) and Katamanallur Gate (near Hoskote) to Sarjapur Road-Hebbal (52 km).

A 34-km underground corridor along the Inner Ring Road and 30-km Hebbal to JP Nagar (ORR-West) is also proposed under this phase additionally. While ORR-West and Magadi Road Toll Gate is old corridors proposed under Phase 3, the other two are a new corridor.

Although it is doubtful that the earlier Phase 3 corridors like Gottigere to Basavapura, Nagawara to Aerospace Park, Kogilu Cross to Rajanakunte, Iblur to Carmelaram and Bommasandra to Attibele will be dropped or executed.

A Senior BMRCL official said that Each project suggested in CMP will have to go through the process of alternative investment analysis, appraisal and approval. The Centre has been encouraging cities to go in for Metrolite systems as it’s less cost-intensive i.e almost 50% cheaper compared to the normal Metro network.

It can be built on the surface as well as elevated tracks. “Metrolite is suggested as the rail-based public transport system has a cost-effective mobility solution for the likely ridership.

The inner ring Metro suggested as the underground system as an elevated system is not feasible due to smaller road width,” the CMP says.

It also suggested, “to plan new Metro lines aligned with the master plan of the city and its areas of growth, keeping in mind the development of economic centres and residential layouts; the focus must also be ensured on core areas, where construction may be difficult”.

Metrolite for Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) and NICE Road

A Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) or Metrolite has been suggested for Peripheral Ring Road and NICE Road.

The CMP Says that The selection between BRTS or Metrolite will need to be done based on detailed ridership assessment and analysis. The total length of BRTS / Metrolite on NICE road and proposed PRR is 107km.

“PRR of 78-km length and 80-metre width is proposed on the northwest periphery of the city with complementary connectivity to NICE Road on the south-east periphery and provision in the middle for BRTS or traction guided at-grade,” it added.

“The overall public transport network of 803km within Bangalore Metropolitan Area is envisaged under different modes — dedicated rails, roads, road lanes, traction-guidance, i.e. Metro, suburban rail, priority bus corridors, BRTS or Metrolite in addition to augmentation of public bus transport services,” it adds

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd to acquire land for Metro extension works

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) will initiate the land acquisition process for the extension of Kochi Metro to Tripunithura Railway Station. Contrary to the earlier plan of Tripunithura municipality acquiring land for constructing a new road connecting Seema auditorium (near railway overbridge on PettahIrumbanam junction road) and railway station, the KMRL will be responsible for acquiring land from S N Junction to the proposed Metro station near Tripunithura railway station.

There is a requirement to acquire 10.75 acres for widening the road and for constructing a new bus terminal. The project is estimated to cost Rs 102 cr. “The municipality does not have enough funds. The matter was taken up before chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. It was assured that KMRL will acquire land required for the metro from S N Junction till their proposed station at Tripunithura,” said municipal chairperson Chandrika Devi.

She said that the local body would have to take up the task of widening the road from the Metro station to the overbridge near the market. Moreover, the municipality will have to acquire land for the bus terminal and execute its construction.

As this plan is put in place the local body will have to pump in Rs 50-60 cr for the project. “We may require to acquire around 3.5 acres. Instructions have given to officials to get the data regarding the exact land required by the local body,” said O V Salim, vice-chairperson. He said the municipality had already started the process for land acquisition. However, as the metro agency is involving in it the local body’s role will be limited.

“The municipality has already received a letter from the KMRL in this regard,” he said and added that the local body would send a letter to the state government indicating the extent of land required for them. The Tripunithura municipality expects to complete the land acquisition and road widening process before their term comes to an end. The next elections to local bodies are due in 2020. “Even if it is not possible to execute the entire plan we want to complete paper works before the next council takes over,” added Salim.

The plan is to have a 21m wide road linking Petta -Irumbanam Junction and the overbridge near the market adjacent to the railway station. This will be a straight road connecting railway station and KMRL can take the Metro through the center of this road. The metro terminal will come up near the new bus terminal. It is being planned to develop the area as a transport hub. Meanwhile, KMRL has not issued an official communique regarding land acquisition along this stretch.

Future Metro stations to be more energy-efficient says DMRC chief

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): DMRC chief Mangu Singh said on Friday that all future buildings of Delhi Metro will be designed to straight away accommodate rooftop solar panels and to eventually get top score from green building rating authorities.

Addressing a gathering at the fourth edition of National Conference on Green Metro Systems at Metro Bhawan here, he said, “The DMRC has been taking steps over the years to make the systems and operations more energy efficient.

“According to the green building initiatives, we have taken certain decisions, and all new stations shall be designed so as to get a platinum rating,” he said.

The platinum rating is the highest rating given to structures by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for adopting the best green practices. The IGBC, part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), was formed in 2001.

The vision of the council is “to enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in the sustainable built environment by 2025”.

According to senior DMRC officials, 107 stations of the Delhi Metro have a platinum rating.

With the inclusion of Rapid Metro in Gurgaon, the total operational network of the metro in Delhi and NCR stands at 389 km. The network has 285 stations, including those in the Noida-Greater Noida corridor or Aqua Line, officials said.

Asserting that all stations built in the future will be able to accommodate rooftop solar panels straightway, Singh said, “In phase-1 and phase-2 structures were not designed to make rooftop solar panels, so changes had to be made.”

A senior Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) official on Friday said all stations on the 29.7-km long Aqua Line in Noida have been awarded platinum rating by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for adopting best green practices.

The corridor, which opened in January this year, connects Delhi with the neighboring city, and starts at Sector 51 in Noida and ends at depot station in Greater Noida.

“All 21 stations of the NMRC (Aqua Line) have been given the platinum rating by the IGBC. The council has given us the highest rating as we fulfilled over 80 percent of the criteria set by it,” the senior official of NMRC said on the sidelines of the conference.

Tree transplants not on track for MahaMetro

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Officials of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited or MahaMetro have long made tall claims of tree plantation drives in the face of much greenery being hacked for the infrastructure project, insisting that they are trying to transplant fully grown trees instead of completely axing them.

However, the Mirror found the onground reality to be quite different. Around five or six trees that were transplanted by this authority from the Nashik Phata-Kasarwadi area in Pimpri-Chinchwad have not survived their new home in Vallabhnagar.

In a much-touted move, Pune Municipal Corporation had transplanted the trees and placed them amid several others, but the shifted ones have now dried up at the new location and seem to be completely ignored.

When quizzed, MahaMetro public relations head Hemant Sonawane said, “We take the utmost care to ensure that most such trees survive. But, in this case, we’ll have to verify what exactly went wrong.”

DMRC MD Mangu Singh says Metros need to bring down water, energy consumption

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Highlighting the urgent need for attention towards the challenges being faced in conservation of natural resources, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) held deliberations on the fourth edition of National Conference on Green Metro Systems.

At the conference on green metro systems, DMRC managing director Mangu Singh stressed the need and importance to conserve the environment for presenting a better world to the future generation.

He said “Transport sector is one of the major energy consumers, and, thus, has a major stake in carbon emissions. Hence, it is the need of the hour for all the metro organizations to lead from the front in bringing down energy and water consumption”.

“They should explore new innovative ways to optimize resources and strive towards updation of the efficiency measures taken earlier and move towards more and more efficient systems.”

Singh applauded the concerted efforts of IGBC and DMRC in spearheading the Green Metro Movement in the country.
