Bentley Systems Announces the Acquisition of GroupBC, UK Leader in Cloud Services for Construction Information Management

Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software and digital twins services for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, today announced the acquisition of GroupBC, a leading UK SaaS software innovator. For over twenty years, GroupBC’s and Bentley’s software solutions have been deployed for complementary purposes to improve project and asset information management.

The transaction results from GroupBC’s expansion agenda, and Bentley’s investment appetite, for international growth opportunities stemming from the UK’s national initiatives for major infrastructure investment and towards infrastructure digital twins. GroupBC’s CDE solutions, BC Projects and BC Enterprise+ have been widely applied in the UK for information management respectively across construction and asset estates. Largely due to the UK’s substantiated ROI experience and its global thought leadership, CDEs have become increasingly availed globally in “going digital” for capital projects and resulting assets.

In 2019, the UK’s (BS 1192) construction project information management guidelines were largely adopted within the global standard ISO 19650. Also in 2019, in its inaugural study of the overall market for Collaborative BIM, ARC Advisory Group ranked Bentley’s ProjectWise system as #1 worldwide.

The new opportunity is to build on ISO 19650, and GroupBC’s UK information management experience, to advance collaborative BIM, through “evergreen” digital twins, to span infrastructure lifecycles. In combination, Bentley’s iTwin Services will now be leveraged to uniquely connect GroupBC CDEs and ProjectWise CDEs. Through semantic alignment and change synchronization, the resulting digital twin’s cloud services will securely federate – fully enabling 4D mixed reality and analytics visibility – previously separate CDEs for construction and engineering.

Keith Bentley, Chief Technology Officer for Bentley Systems, said, “Our iTwin cloud services, taking advantage of iModel-based solutions for interoperability, are ideal for federating CDEs. This enables us to assure that the users of our BC SaaS services will benefit from further extending the value of their project and asset information through digital twins.

With the help of our new GroupBC colleagues, we will now be able to better serve engineers, contractors, and owners by bringing together their collective IT (information management), OT (operational technologies including reality modelling), and ET (engineering models). I am confident that the resulting improvements in project and asset performance will be consistent with the UK’s demanding but welcome expectations for new ROI breakthroughs from digital
twins.” Simon Horsley, UK regional executive for Bentley Systems, said, “Our many UK users, projects, and owners in common with GroupBC will gain a lot from our joining forces to advance CDEs through digital twins.

I have been tasked by Bentley management to help The UK to continue to lead the world in going digital for infrastructure advancement, and our new offerings and colleagues from GroupBC bring essential momentum as we pool resources to meet our market’s expanded ‘infrastructure revolution’ requirements. I particularly welcome to Bentley Systems GroupBC’s co-founders Sanjeev Shah and Stephen Crompton, and CEO Wes Simmons.”

Sanjeev Shah, the co-founder of GroupBC, said, “This is a hugely exciting day for our shared accounts and for both our workforces moving forward. The opportunities which arise from bringing our two companies and their respective product portfolios together are enormous, as is the global reach which Bentley can now add for us. Working together we will be even better able to support, through ‘going digital,’ construction and asset lifecycles.”

Stephen Crompton, CPO and co-founder of GroupBC, added, “Bentley is going to provide a great new home for our products to thrive in. GroupBC has always promoted an integrated, best-of-breed approach, and being able to complement our leading software solutions with
existing best-of-breed products from Bentley presents a uniquely exciting opportunity for us and our user organizations, opening the door for unparalleled integration between our solutions and bridging the gaps between design, construction and ongoing asset information
management.”

Wes Simmons, CEO of GroupBC, said, “Our founders and I would like to thank our equity partner YFM for their visionary support over the last five years. For our GroupBC team, customers, and partners, joining Bentley Systems ensures a future of continued growth,
including beyond construction information management through broadly federated digital twins and international expansion. Here’s to BC CDE and digital twins advancement!”

Bengaluru suburban rail project finds Private funding of coaches useful

BENGALURU (Metro Rail News): After directive provided by the PM’s Office to explore the private funding options for the maintenance of the trains for the Bengaluru suburban rail project, the Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprise the Nodal Agency has undertaken a detailed study to investigate that if PPP is possible and the result is feasible to have private funding of the coaches and that it will have a marginal impression on the profit margin of the railways.

It has also recommended that exploring the Special Public Entity for the funding and considering it as a backup option can also be possessed and its set to propose the detailed report in a while.

Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav offered the total funding of the suburban rail project to be Rs 18,621 Cr for 148.

17 km where a complete of 306 ac coaches would be needed at the time of the beginning of the suburban project. “The entire expense of the coaches works out to around Rs 2,200 Cr. The PM’s Office then directed that the coaches be funded and maintained by a private firm, on the lines of the PPP model adopted in major projects”, stated sources.

Private funding will decrease the entire expense of Rs 18, 621 cr to Rs.15, 767 cr as per the sources. The expense of funding coaches as per 2025 prices is expected at Rs 2,785 cr with the coaches being leased for 30 year period to the leaser.

Though we can expect that the completion to take place by 2026, the original deadline specified in the Detailed Project Report has been maintained. During the ear of launch, the number of coaches has been named as 306 in the original DPR.

Considering the critical appraisal of the Private assistance for the coaches and if the coaches would be secretly funded then the internal cost of return that was earlier 10.99% now would be 10.74%.

This report has also declared that the expense of borrowings from the govt that was 8-9% earlier would raise up to 12% below the private leadership. The report also declared that Delhi was also looking forward to the PPP for line-5 but gave up because of the huge prices involved.

The govt may adopt the PPP model for the funding of coaches but they have to take the help of SPV proposal into consideration, further added.

Hyderabad Metro’s old city work to start soon

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): On Saturday Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao announced that the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited will soon take up construction work of the metro rail in Hyderabad’s old city region.

Previous month KCR had inaugurated the stretch between Jubilee Bus Station and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station. Where the HMRL had initially confirmed an agreement for the metro rail to reach up to Falaknuma in an old city area the land acquisition issues and demands of realignment forced the company to cancel its plan short and conclude the corridor at MGBS.

“I recently spoke to officials of Larsen & Toubro and they were asking for help from the state govt. I told them that we will do so, provided you complete the old city metro rail on war footing basis. Previously there were apprehensions and objections, raised by Majlis (AIMIM) also, for the change in alignment. Now, all doubt is cleared. Everyone is accepting and there is no hurdle,” in response to a question by Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi KCR said the Telangana Assembly.

Akbaruddin Owaisi also the floor leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen had asked for a status update on taking the metro rail to the old city. “I told L&T officials that I would request Akbaruddin Owaisi and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi to stand with them with other MLAs from the old city to take forward the construction of the metro rail. I hope you will do so. Then there would be no problem,” KCR declared.

KCR request Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao to commence work on the metro and finish it as soon as possible also he spoke about the dilapidated building at the Osmania General Hospital, that has been dubbed risky for occupation and the need for a new building. He stated that many people had filed cases in the court to stall the demolition of the existing building so that a new one can be constructed in its place.

“I also believe the old city needs one more govt hospital beside the OGH. We can sit down and discuss this. We can even build it a little away from OGH, maybe in your Chandrayangutta constituency,” KCR confirmed Akbaruddin Owaisi.

World’s First Hydrogen Train tested in the Netherland

Alstom has performed ten days of tests of the Coradia iLint hydrogen fuel cell train on the 65 kilometres of the line between Groningen and Leeuwarden in the north of the Netherlands. The tests follow 18 successful months of passenger service on the Buxtehude–Bremervörde–Bremerhaven–Cuxhaven line in Germany, where a total of 41 Coradia iLint has already been ordered. The latest tests make the Netherlands the second country in Europe where the train has proven itself a unique emissions-free solution for non-electrified lines.

Last October, Alstom and the Province of Groningen, local operator Arriva, the Dutch railway infrastructure manager ProRail and the energy company Engie signed a pilot project agreement to test the Coradia iLint, the world’s first passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cells, in the Netherlands. DEKRA, an independent testing inspection and certification company, has been appointed test leader. This series of tests are being performed at night at up to 140 km/h without passengers. For the purpose of the tests, a mobile filling station has been erected by Engie for refuelling the Coradia iLint with completely green – sustainably produced – hydrogen.

“The tests in the Netherlands demonstrate how our hydrogen train is mature in terms of availability and reliability, providing the same performance as traditional regional trains, but with the benefit of low noise and zero emissions. It is also easy to integrate into an existing fleet and is compliant with all safety regulations. The Coradia iLint hydrogen train is a reliable emission-free train ready to help transport us to a carbon-neutral Europe,” said Bernard Belvaux, Managing Director, Alstom Benelux.

The Coradia iLint is the world’s first regional passenger train to enter service equipped with fuel cells to convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, thus eliminating pollutant emissions related to propulsion. The complete train is quiet, and its only emission is water. Purpose-built for use on non-electrified lines, it provides clean, sustainable traction with no sacrifice in performance. It has a range of approximately 1000 kilometres – the same as equivalent-size diesel multiple units. The train is developed and produced by the Alstom teams in Salzgitter, Germany and Tarbes, France.

The Dutch railway network has approximatively 1,000 kilometres of non-electrified line on which around 100 diesel trains currently operate daily. On Saturday 7th of March, the station of Groningen will welcome the press and public to discover the Coradia iLint at the platform between 12:00 to 16:00.
