INDIA (Metro Rail News): Due to the impact of COVID-19 all the passenger trains, inter-state buses and metro services have been suspended till March 31 across the country while 75 districts where cases of coronavirus were reported completely locked down as authorities moved extraordinary measures to control the extent of the disease.

The declarations were taken at a high-level meeting of chief secretaries of all states and the cabinet secretary and the principal secretary to the PM, officials stated on Sunday.

The lockdown was announced including UP, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The state govt would issue orders providing only necessary services to operate in these 75 districts with verified COVID-19 cases or casualties, a Home Ministry official spoke.

The officials stressed that all the steps were vital to ending the chain of spreading. It was agreed that there was an essential need to continue the lockdowns on the movement of non-essential commuter transport, including ISBT, till March 31 to hold the spread of the deadly COVID-19, they stated.

The suspensions also carry all suburban train services. On Saturday the railways announced 3 incidents where people required to remain in quarantine were seen travelling on trains. Of those detected in the 3 instances, 12 tested +ve for COVID-19.

On Friday the railways had cut down its services by dropping a majority of trains. However, it had provided all trains that had already commenced the journey to proceed. “No train except goods trains would run till 2400 hrs of March 31. However, a bare minimum of suburban services and the Kolkata Metro service would continue to run till 2400 hrs of March 22. After that these services would also be stopped till 2400 hrs of March 31,” a spokesperson of the Indian Railways declared.

It was observed that certain state govt has already issued orders in this opinion. All the chief secretaries notified that there was an overwhelming and spontaneous reply to the call for ‘Janta curfew’ given by PM Narendra Modi. The state govt may increase the list depending on their estimation of the situation.

It was chosen to suspend all train till March 31, including suburban rail services. However, goods trains are exempted. All the metro services were suspended till March 31, the officials announced. The railways declared suspension of all 13,523 commuter services from March 22 midnight-March 31 midnight and announced only goods trains would run throughout.

“To ensure the essential supplies in different parts of the country, movement of goods trains would continue,” the Railway Ministry announced in a statement. It added that travellers can claim a full refund for all the trains cancelled in this period till June 21.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): In terms of novel coronavirus spread in India Delhi Metro rail services would remain closed till March 31 2020, DMRC disclosed. However, the metro services would be operated for necessary internal operational preservation activities in this duration and security of the system would continue to be taken care of by the CISF, DMRC stated in a statement.

Along with that Noida-Greater Noida metro city, bus services would also be suspended till 31 March with instant effect, reported by NMRC.

Earlier, on account of nation-wide ‘Janta Curfew‘ that was seen on Sunday from 7 am-9 pm after PM Narendra Modi’s appeal the Delhi Metro Rail had chosen to keep its services closed on 22nd of March.

“In the wake of ‘Janata Curfew’ to be seen this Sunday 22nd March, DMRC has decided to keep its services closed. This move is pointed at encouraging the public to stay inside the house and keep social distancing which is required in the battle against Covid-19,” The DMRC announced in a tweet. In a statement, DMRC also told, “Random thermal scanning of commuters would be carried out at all metro stations.”

On Sunday Further, the Cabinet Secretary reviewed Covid-19 status with Chief Secretaries of states and a slew of decisions were taken, that involved lockdown in other 75 districts across the country affected by a coronavirus. These districts have either reported confirmed cases or casualties relating to Covid-19. Only essential services would be allowed.

It also determined that all trains would be suspended till 31 March, not even metro rail and inter-state buses would operate till the end of the month. On Monday 23 March, Delhi metro rail had declared that it would operate only for 6 hours.

KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): On Sunday the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (KMRCL) stated that the metro services would close till March 31 as a precautionary measure to prevent the outbreak of Coronavirus even the Indian Railways determined it would not operate any commuter trains across the country till the last of this month.

“There would be no Metro services from today i.e 23rd of march till 24 hours (midnight) of 31st March 2020,” Kolkata Metro rail tweeted on its page. As the Kolkata Metro is one of the lifelines of its city offering around 630,000 commuters regularly. However, the footfall went down after everyone began staying inside the house and avoided public transport.

On the 16th of March, the number of Metro commuters decreased to almost 520,000. Around 4 positive cases of coronavirus have been recorded from West Bengal till now. Almost 21,000 citizens have been kept under hospital along with home surveillance in the state.

The West Bengal govt had asked the railway ministry to stop every train from entering the state till 31 March to shield the state from potential carriers of Covid-19 from external.

Also, the state put a ban on interstate bus (ISBT) movement to check the outbreak of the dangerous disease. The number of coronavirus patients soared to 341 and 2 more people who had got the infection died in Bihar and Maharashtra.

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): In the sense of sanitising trains to curb the extent of COVID-19 the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) would run at a gap of 7 min instead of 5 min from March 23-31. “This weekend time schedule of the metro trains would continue for weekdays also in terms of disinfecting trains,” replied CMRL officials. 

This would be during the day in lines from Washermenpet-Airport by AGDMS and Central-Airport by Koyambedu, announced by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd.

Commuters travelling from Central-St Thomas Mount would get trains at a gap of 14 min. CMRL has been sanitising the trains on a regular basis and has been screening commuters in all its stations.

Along with hand sanitisers have been placed at the machine where people place their metro travel card and drop travel tokens. Anticipation announcements are communicating in the trains and commuters are told to maintain one-metre distance among each other.

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has also announced suspension of services between 10 am and 4 pm from March 23 to March 31 to discourage non-essential travel by the public.

In a press release on Saturday, the CMRL said that the decision to reschedule the services has been made to prevent the spread of coronavirus. According to the release, Chennai Metro rail services will be restricted to specific hours of the day during the suspension period.

The trains will run from 6 am to 8 am enabling citizens engaging in essential services to commute, and from 8 am to 10 am for the office-goers. Similarly, the services will be operational between 4 pm and 8 pm in the evening. Metro trains will not be operational between 4.30 am and 6 am, 10 am and 4 pm and 8 pm and 11 pm.

Earlier, the CMRL had announced that it will be operating one train every seven minutes instead of one train every five minutes from March 23 to March 31. The CMRL had also announced that in response to the Prime Minister’s call to observe a curfew from 7 am to 9 pm on March 22, it will be suspending its services fully on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu meanwhile has reported three new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. Of the three cases, two are Thai nationals and one a resident of New Zealand who was visiting Tamil Nadu. This takes the number of active cases in the state to five, including a 21-year-old man from Delhi and a 20-year-old student who landed in Chennai from Dublin, Ireland.

The state government has also announced that all educational institutions, cinema theatres, entertainment centres, amusement parks, shopping malls etc be shut down till March 31 as a precautionary measure against the spread of coronavirus.

HYDERABAD (Metro Rail News): On Wednesday State municipal administration & urban development minister Mr KT Rama Rao stated that they will complete the left construction works of Hyderabad metro rail in the old city as soon as possible.

During responding to the questions asked by the members in the State Assembly he made this statement. He replied that they will finish the process of the acquisition of religious areas with the support of their local leaders. Criticising the union govt, he performed it clear that the Center had only ten per cent share in the project and also added that they yet did not get Rs.250 cr from the Center for the project.

Saying that the state govt is absolutely serious on public transport he announced that the CM KCR had given liberal funds for the overall development of Hyderabad city. KCR request Minister KT Rama Rao to start work on the metro and complete it as shortly as possible also he spoke about the dilapidated building at the Osmania General Hospital, that has been dubbed risky for trade and the need for a new building.

He also said that several people had filed cases in the court to stall the demolition of the existing building so that a fresh one can be constructed in its place.

DHAKA (Metro Rail News): The Dhaka Metro rail, factory trial run of the 1st train built for the Dhaka metro rail project begun in Japan, according to a Facebook post of the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Company Ltd on Wednesday

VISAKHAPATNAM (Metro Rail News): Urban Mass Transit Company Limited would provide the DPR for the 79.91 km 1st phase of Vizag metro project. Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) emerged as the successful bidder by quoting a cost of Rs 5.33 cr which is the lowest among all the bidders.

Thus Urban Mass Transit would be bestowed with the ability to update the current DPR earlier made for the aimed 42.5 km metro project and include the 3.85 km new section from Gajuwaka to Vizag Steel Plant.

A current DPR would be made for almost 33.5 km of the project including the alternative analysis report. Urban Mass Transit Company will also allow transaction advisory consultancy services for the bidding process management. On Thursday the state govt authorised the Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation to start into an agreement with the UMTC.
