Railways to introduce 20 Made in India innovations soon

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): The Railway Board has decided to execute 20 new ‘Made in India‘ innovations by its workers to make passenger train journeys safer and improve comfort. 

These innovations would add advanced passenger facilities like a warning bell to alert passengers minutes before a train departs, real-time CCTV monitoring inside coaches, the printing of unreserved tickets through mobile applications – on a mass scale.

Railway Board has issued the order to all zonal general managers and production units to gear up for the implementation of these ideas in next three months. All most all the innovations are aimed at technical improvements to boost safety and passenger comfort.

Here are some of the innovations indigenously developed by various zones and divisions of Indian railways:

Ultrasonic detection of rails: The North Central Railway (NCR), Prayagraj has developed a vehicular system for ultrasonic flaw detection of rails, which is currently done manually. The carriage and wagon department of Prayagraj division of NCR has developed a detector for hot axle box in running trains much before a possible derailment due to seizure.

Pyrometers: The Malda division of Eastern Railway has used pyrometers to monitor the speed and temperature of tracks.

Natural water coolers: The Western Railway (WR) has developed natural water coolers, with zero electric consumption, each at a cost of Rs 1.25 lakh with a lifespan of ten years. The system works on the principle of heat transfer where water is passed through copper coils which are covered with cooling fabric active through a water dripping system. These coolers have been installed at Borivali, Dahanu Road, Nandurbar, Udhana, and Bandra railway stations.

A bell system: This system is developed by the Prayagraj division which alerts passengers at platforms that the train is ready to depart within two minutes and they should occupy their seats. This is already in use on platform number one of the Prayagraj junction railway station.

Real-time CCTV footage: On the list is also a system to monitor real-time CCTV footage on-board trains. While the coaches in Humsafar trains have CCTV surveillance, the footage is not monitored in real-time. The NCR has developed a system for real-time monitoring inside trains and has installed it in all 18 coaches of Humsafar trains.

The CCTV display unit is provided in the guard’s compartment and the videos can be recorded and viewed later; it is aimed at quick resolution of crimes on-board trains.

Air quality monitoring: Another innovation the Indian Railways is looking at is air quality monitoring equipment developed by NCR and installed at Prayagraj Junction railway station.

Unreserved tickets through apps: With the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) encouraging people to go contact-less, the Northern Railway (NR) developed a system through which they issued unreserved tickets through mobile apps and Bluetooth printers.

This Mobile App helped Railways to open online UTS ticketing counters at stations, platforms, tent cities and passenger holding areas without UTS connectivity and uninterrupted power supply as these devices work on lithium-ion batteries and SIM cards.

In addition to the above, Indian Railways has developed the first ‘Post-COVID Coach’ to ensure a COVID free journey. The coach would have amenities like Handsfree, Copper-coated handrails & latches, Plasmdioxide, Titanium di-oxide coating etc.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) launched the first precast segment on Delhi –Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor at P382 between Guldhar and Duhai on July 13, 2020. Launching Girder which is also known as launching gantry is assembled on piers (pillars) through various stages on temporary supports (which are later on removed before segment lifting).
The various segments lifted are joined together to make viaduct.

There will be 12 segments in the first span of 34 meters. It will take around 6 days to launch join and complete this span and afterwards launcher will move towards Ghaziabad side., At present the launcher is between Guldhar and Duhai.

The segments of this corridor are being casted at the Vasundhara casting yard. RRTS viaduct will have the design speed capability of 180 kmph. This achievement is very significant for country’s first RRTS network considering the recent outbreak of Covid19 and the lockdown conditions in the country. This has been possible only due to the relaxation provided by the government and all support by different stakeholders.

NCRTC is taking all the safety measures to ensure that the launching work does not affect the public or the moving traffic. The area below is duly gated and barricaded, for the movement of workers to the launching girder manlifts and temporary staircases are being used.

The work for the 17 km long priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai is in progress and soon superstructures will be visible.

Launching of the first girder during the current scenario signifies NCRTC’s efforts to complete the project on time.

Maha Govt approves TOD zone for Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar metro corridor

PUNE (Metro Rail News): The Government of Maharashtra has approved the transit-oriented development (TOD) zone for the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro corridor and has welcomed advice and criticisms from homeowners.

The 500-metre radius area from metro station declared as the TOD zone by the state government, where developers could use added floor space index (FSI) to increase population density. Maximum four FSI has been allowed in the TOD zone — anyone having a 1000 square feet plot can build up to 4000 square feet if the property falls in the TOD zone.

 Earlier, The TOD policy for Vanaz-Ramwadi route and Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate metro corridor by approved by the State Govt.

“Most of the part of Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line is falling in the PMC area, and some part from Balewadi-Hinjewadi is under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The state released the notification as the revenue generated through this corridor would be shared by both the organisations and would be used for developing metro and transport-related works. As the TOD zone has been declared, both the organisations would get more revenue through premium for new construction.” Said PMC city engineer Prashant Waghmare

Earlier, it was proposed that additional FSI would be allowed on both sides of the metro corridor. Still, instead of the corridor, the state has approved the TOD zone in the 500 square metre radius area of the metro station.

“The town planning director has invited suggestions and objections and residents can do it within a month from the publication of the advertisement.” Said Waghmare

Some NGOs have opposed the issuance of an additional 4 FSI on metro corridors. They state that it is wrong that the government is trying to improve public transport and it will lead to an increasing population in the city. It will be an additional burden on the city’s infrastructure.

NAGPUR (Metro Rail News): Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) has received a single bid from the AECOM-Systra-CEG JV firms in response to tender invited for providing general consultancy services for several forthcoming mass rapid transit projects in Maharashtra.

Maha Metro recently announced that after the opening of the technical bids received against the tender called from the global engineering consultancy firms the authority has received a single bid from a consortium of AECOM, Systra MVA Consulting and Consulting Engineers Group (CEG).

On December 21, 2019, MahaMetro had invited global bids (vide Tender No. M1CONSUL-03/2019) from the design and engineering firms for the engagement of general consultants for Maha Metro projects.

As per the tender notice, Maha Metro was seeking assistance in design, supervision, safety, quality control, and contract management for the Phase II of Nagpur Metro and Pune Metro, and Phase I of Thane Metro Rail and Nashik Metro Neo projects.

The General Consultant will be responsible for providing system consultancy services for major systems including 25kV Overhead system, the procurement of Rolling Stock and Communication-based Train Control/Signalling system for all upcoming new and expansion of existing MRTS projects.

Now, it is upon Maha Metro to appoint the sole bidder i.e. the consortium of AECOM, Systra MVA Consulting and Consulting Engineers Group (CEG) or may call new tenders to get other global consultants.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Govt two ambitious projects the first one is Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) and the second one is Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project that will transform the railway services in India will not be delayed despite the coronavirus crisis, Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav said on Wednesday.

Currently, Almost all the infrastructure projects in the nation are suffering delays due to the lockdown, linked with the lack of labour and the financial slowdown.

The completion of the DFC will decongestion the railway network For the commencement of the 151 private train services in April 2023, 

“By the time the private trains begin operations, we would have completed all our infrastructure work. We are doing a lot of infrastructure work of doubling and tripling, which would address the congestion issues that these trains might face, and he said when asked about the congestion on the trunk routes.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor which has a deadline of December 2023 has a dispute with issues from protests by landowners. The increasing cost of the project due to the widening gap between the Indian rupee and the Japanese yen, as 80% of the Rs 1 trillion needed to fund the project will come from a 20-year Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) loan. 

National High-Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL), the executing agency provided the latest status of the project. According to report, Agency has floated 68 per cent of its civil works tenders covering 345 km out of 508 km along with a separate bid for the fabrication of 28 steel bridges for the high-speed corridor in Maharashtra.

Although Joint measurement survey of land required for the project is about to complete, the Agency possesses 60% land needed for the project ( approximately 77% land in Gujarat, 80% in Dadar Nagar Haveli and 22% in Maharashtra). 

“On the other hand, physical work is still to start. However, the tendering process is on, and land acquisition is presently underway,” Yadav said.

“A pre-bid meeting to explain bidder’s query was also arranged during the lockdown period through video conferencing. The Railways’ revenue from passenger traffic has been affected due to the pandemic, and freight loading will enhance its earnings by the year-end” Said Mr. Yadav

“There is a lot of tracks available for freight trains because passenger trains are off the network. This year, freight traffic will be 50 per cent more than last years, thereby increasing the Railways’ earnings despite the pandemic. During the lockdown and even currently we are working on our infrastructure to assure that we remove bottlenecks. We have utilised this opportunity to finish 200 of our unfinished works and utilised the opportunity for multi-tracking, doubling, he said.

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): NCRTC has geared up construction activities on India’s first Regional Rail between Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut. M/s Larsen & Tubro today kickstarted the foundation work in Modinagar and Shatabdi Nagar in Meerut under package 3 works. With this main construction work for other than the priority section of Sahibabad to Duhai has started.

L&T is constructing the elevated viaduct from Duhai (EPE) to Modi Nagar North with 2 elevated stations, Murad Nagar & Modi Nagar South in package 3 Lot 1 and elevated viaduct from the start of Modi Nagar North Station to Shatabdi Nagar Station with 5 elevated stations viz. Modi Nagar North, Meerut South, Partapur, Rithani & Shatabdi Nagar in Package 3 Lot 2. It is also establishing a state-of-the-art casting yard at Shatabdi Nagar, Meerut.

Shri Vinay Kumar Singh, MD, NCRTC today inspected the ongoing works in the entire section along with this newly started construction work. Mr. Singh also overviewed various preparations done for Monsoon. He advised NCRTC engineers and the agency to ensure workers safety and convenience of local residents during construction while taking care of all essential precautions for COVID-19 as specified in the NCRTC issued Standard Operating Procedure.

He has also visited the newly started NCRTC’s site office at Modinagar. This particular site office is constructed in a record time of less than four months during COVID-19 pandemic. All the construction, electrical, signaling, and telecommunication work of the 33 km long stretch between Duhai to Shatabdi Nagar will be taken care by this office.

India’s first regional rail – Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS is one of the three RRTS corridors prioritized for implementation.

The 82 km long corridor will have 24 stations including two depots at Duhai and Modipuram and the distance will be covered in less than one hour.

The construction on this corridor is in full swing, the casting of segments for super structure is in progress at Vasundhara Casting yard. The launching gantry तारिणी 2.1 on package 2 is ready to launch first span of viaduct between Guldhar and Duhai, while the launching gantry तारिणी 1.1 of package 1 is near completion to facilitate the erection of first span near Sahibabad station.. Construction of all the four stations of the priority section – Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, and Duhai is in progress. Electrical utility shifting work is in progress in Vaishali green belt, between EXP 1C to P1 (Total 32 span). A total of 23 EHT lines infringing the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor have already been shifted/modified so far. Road widening and utility diversion work are underway between Duhai to Modipuram. The pile load test between Duhai to Muradnagar has been completed.

The civil construction work on the 82 Km-long Delhi- Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor of RRTS is expected to be completed by 2025.

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) commenced the rainwater harvesting system at metro stations. High Court judge Justice Devan Ramachandran inaugurated the rainwater harvesting system at Companypadi metro station on Friday.

“The rainwater harvesting project of the KMRL will be beneficial for the public. There are many people who struggle to get freshwater and we have to prioritize water and nature conservation activities”, Said Justice Devan Ramachandran at the time of inauguration.

KMRL Managing Director Alkesh Kumar Sharma said that rainwater harvesting projects will be implemented in stations. It is expected that 420 lakh litres of water can be collected in 22 metro stations in a year.
