Kolkata ( Metro Rail News ) – In a major move, the Kolkata Metro has achieved a wonder. The ventilation shaft, which is 43.

5m deep, was completed jointly by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) and Afcons, a private engineering company. Such shafts are not only used to provide ventilation to the tunnels, but also for evacuation during an emergency. The evacuation shaft is located on Strand Road near Hooghly river, said one official.

The Metro shaft has been constructed adopting innovative engineering techniques and methodology to navigate geological challenges and overcome any impact on Kolkata’s circular railway track along the Hooghly, Afcons project manager Satya Narayan Kunwar aid.

The shaft is located very close to the river and abutting with the circular railway which makes its deep excavation very challenging, it said. The circular railway line runs parallel to the river in stretches which will connect Kolkata to Howrah.

Indian Railways to experience a loss of Rs 35,000 Crore with Passenger Train services hampered by the Pandemic

New Delhi ( Metro Rail News ) – “The Railways this year is looking at just 10-15% of the passenger segment revenue compared to Rs 50,000 crore last year,” said Mr. V.K. Yadav, the chairman of the railway board.

Indian Railways is currently running only 230 passenger trains with 75% occupancy compared with the more than 13,000 daily mail, express and suburban trains it used to operate prior to the outbreak. “Demand is a concern in the passenger railways and we don’t know how it will pan out in the future,” Yadav said.

Asia’s oldest railway is banking on freight business to offset losses from the passenger segment. “The target for freight loading has been fixed in such a way that whatever shortfall we see from the passenger traffic, it will be made up by freight traffic,” Yadav said but didn’t disclose the revenue it expects by transporting goods.

The government, in this year’s budget, had set a freight loading target of 1,265 million tonnes for 2020-21. The target for freight earnings for the ongoing fiscal is around Rs 1.47 lakh crore, while passenger revenue was estimated at Rs 61,000 crore.

Yadav, however, said he’s optimistic that freight loading will increase by 50% this year compared to last year, and would be achieved by developing infrastructure, improving efficiency in operations and rationalising policies. He said the railways is working on reducing freight costs and transit time of goods.

The railways is also working on a marketing strategy and has decided to set up business development units across different zones in the country to connect with stakeholders concerned, he said.

Barring reduced demand for coal, it’s seeing increased freight as loading of other items like steel, iron ore, grains and fertilisers has increased as economic activity resumed.

To be sure, the freight load till July 27—at 81.3 million tonnes—is already 95% of what it was in July 2019.

Hyderabad ( Metro Rail News ) – As there is still uncertainty looming over the resumption of Metro rail services, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited may invoke force majeure clause with the Telangana government seeking an extension of the concession period equivalent to the time it could not operate due to the lockdown, the company said in its latest annual report.

uncertainty still looming over the resumption of Metro rail services, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited may invoke force majeure clause with the Telangana government seeking an extension of the concession period equivalent to the time it could not operate due to the lockdown, the company said in its latest annual report. The concession period of the project is 35 years, from the appointed date of July 5, 2012, including the initial construction period of five years.

This is extendable for a further period of 25 years, subject to fulfilment of certain conditions by the SPV (special purpose vehicle) as set out in the concession agreement. The L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) said it has already submitted project cost overrun details to the state government for Rs 3,756 crore and “has been pursuing the matter with the government for providing relief.” The original cost at the time of conception was Rs 16, 375 crores which have now crossed Rs 20,000 crore.

Metro Rail operations in the city came to a standstill from March 22 due to the lockdown announced by the Centre. “…However, the company is protected by the force majeure clauses of the Concession Agreement to claim extension of concession period equal in length to the period during which the Concessionaire was prevented from collection of Fare and reimbursement of force majeure costs. The management of the company will study the impact and will lodge appropriate claims within reasonable time once the operations are resumed,” it said the annual report.

Hyderabad and Mumbai are the only two cities in the country where Metro Rail is operated by private players under PPP (public-private partnership) mode and hence the resumption of operations is essential for the healthy survival of the concessionaire, an expert of the public transport said. The company’s revenues from operations and other income for 2019-20 stood at Rs 598.20 crore (including fare and non-fare revenue) as against Rs 318.46 crore for the previous financial year.

The loss before tax and after tax were Rs 382.21 crore for the financial year under review as against loss before and after tax of Rs 147.32 crore and Rs 148.15 crore respectively for the previous financial year. The Concession Agreement includes construction of 71.

Magazine published post AUG (2)

The Lockdown restrictions have although been eased up, but the pandemic is not over. Instead, the Coronavirus spread is gaining pace, and we have crossed 2 million marks recently. The public transport systems remain suspended, but the question is, how long it can be? If the other economic activities have been opened up, then it’s obvious that the government is finding ways of opening up the metro and rail networks again for the public.

However, it will not be an easy task for different stakeholders to bring back the passengers on board. A lot of fear persists among the people, and they are avoiding one to one contact. The COVID has created havoc and devastated many things overnight. Now, it is the responsibility of the different authorities involved in running these Public transport systems to plan in such a way that the passengers feel safe while travelling. It is need of the hour to take a few initiatives to change the way of fare system, and the best way to go contactless in the fare system can be the implementation of NCMC cards across the metros.

Providing a COVID resistant environment to passengers may help in reducing the fear which persist today among the people. Distribution of free masks in metros can be a way to attract commuters. SALVI/NEW DELHI ( Metro Rail News) – Bombardier Transportation has begun dispatching new MOVIA metro coaches to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The train coaches are being supplied from its plant located in Savli, Gujarat. This delivery is part of a 40 coach order for which the firm had been awarded a tender last year in March.

DMRC had in October 2018 invited bids for supplying a fleet of 40 new broad gauge coaches compatible with its existing RS2, RS5, RS7 and RS11 type train-sets supplied by Bombardier in the past and according to the industry experts, Bombardier was naturally the only bidder for this contract even though the DMRC went for a tender. The industry experts say that no one else other than the Bombardier transportation was able to supply the coaches demanded by the DMRC.

With an estimate of RS 562, the final contract was awarded to the Bombardier transportation for 430 crores after negotiations between the DMRC and the Bombardier transportation in March last year. Bombardier Transportation is sending these coaches from its Savi plant located in Gujarat.

It is not known yet to us about the destination of these coaches. As per the sources, it may be either the 49.31 km Yellow line’s  Khyber Pass Depot in North Delhi or Sultanpur Depot in South Delhi. The sources familiar with the matter told that the DMRC has not made it clear yet and we will need to wait for knowing it. Once the coaches arrive then only it will become clear as which depot, the DMRC chooses for these coaches.

“The firm had a deadline of 100 weeks to supply all 40 coaches after the letter of acceptance was issued on May 16 2019” said one official.
