The first diaphragm wall of the proposed Naveen Market metro station was lowered to a depth of about 22 meters by means of advanced cranes. The diaphragm wall can be understood as the boundary of a metro station. Before the construction of the underground metro station, this wall is constructed as a security enclosure around it. The D-wall is made up of small rectangular panels measuring around 5 meters in length and around 800 millimetres (mm) in width. Approx 100 such panels are used to prepare the D-wall of a UG metro station, 105 panels will be used in the construction of the Naveen Market Metro station.

For underground section-I, a special casting yard has been set up at the HBTU premises, where rings will be cast for the underground tunnel. Today, Shri. Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, UPMRC also inaugurated the casting process of the first ring through the machine. This ring will be made up of 6 small segments, having a total diameter of about 6 meters. The ring cast in this yard will support the tunnel during tunnelling work by Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).

Kanpur Metro have a Special Inverter with Third Rail DC Traction System for Energy Conservation

Kanpur Metro trial run to start from Wednesday

UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA (Metro Rail News): Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC) has claimed another innovation while executing the Kanpur Metro Rail Project. For the very first time in India, UPMRC has made the provision in the Kanpur Metro Rail Project for installing a special inverter device with the Third Rail DC Traction System to convert the Direct Current (DC) power regenerated through the train’s breaking into Alternate Current and reroute the same to the Metro System for reuse. Kanpur Metro’s trains will have an energy efficiency of about 40-45% which means at the expenditure of every 1000 units, up to 450 units can be regenerated through breaking and be used again with the help of ‘Regenerative Breaking Technology’. No other Metro Project in India, that is running on the Third Rail DC Traction System has such type of arrangement to conserve energy.

At present, the Bangalore, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Gurgaon Rapid Metro Projects are operating on the Third Rail DC Traction System in the country and none of them has any provision to reuse the Direct Current (DC) energy regenerated through train braking. This is because the energy regenerated is in DC form, while the rest of the Metro system runs on AC current. Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) has provided the above-mentioned special inverter for the Traction System in Kanpur, which can convert 750 volts DC current regenerated through braking of the train into 33 kV AC current for reuse in the system.

Speaking in this regard, Shri Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, UPMRC said, “With the objective of ‘Clean Metro, Green Metro’, we have made innovations for energy conservation while executing our projects. In the Metro Projects operating with AC Traction System in the country, including Lucknow, there is a provision for energy conservation with the technique of ‘Regenerative Braking’, but no such system is available for the Third Rail DC Traction System. With the help of this innovation, the Kanpur Metro Rail Project will set an example in terms of energy conservation for all other Metro Projects in the country that are operating on the Third Rail Traction System.

MAHARASHTRA, INDIA (Metro Rail News): MMRDA announced that they are set to procure 10 more rakes for its monorail project, which is expected to improve the frequency of trains and the ridership. The first rake of the train is likely to come by the end of 2022. All the rakes will be made in India.

The MMRDA has awarded the tender to Medha Servo Drives Pvt. Ltd to procure ten monorail rakes as per the decision taken in a meeting in September 2021, said MMRDA officials. The cost of this project is approximately Rs. 590 crores. Medha is buying the new trains in a bid to run the Monorail efficiently and improve its connectivity.

“We are trying to revive the Monorail and improvement of its route’s connectivity with metro rail and run it efficiently. Once all the new monorail rakes, which will be completely indigenous, become operational, it will reduce the headway and the ridership is expected to increase,” said MMRDA officials.

Accordingly to the report given by MMRDA, in July 2018, it was decided to buy ten new rakes with four coaches each. In March 2019, the first tender was floated for the same and during which it was observed that the Chinese companies were demanding several changes in terms and conditions. At the same time, due to COVID-19 and the pandemic, the Central government had instructed to promote the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. As a result, the old tenders were cancelled, and new ones floated to increase the participation of Indian companies in August 2020.

After that three Indian companies, i.e., BHEL, Titagarh and Medha that shown interest in the bids and out of which the MMRDA shortlisted Medha as the lowest bidder.

LUCKNOW, INDIA (Metro Rail News): Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra presented the futuristic vision of metro network expansion after 25 years and beyond in the three days, New Urban India Conclave-2021 organized at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow on Thursday.

While Speaking at the conclave, Secretary MoHUA said, “Since the Independence of India, revolutionary changes have taken place in the field of public transport. Metro has played a vital role in making urban transportation which provides safety, convenience, accessibility & efficiency to its commuter’s. In the 21st century, the metro has become the need for urban transport. After 25 years from today, when everybody will be celebrating the 100th year of Independence, the metro will expand in at least 100 cities of the country, extending the network up to 5,000 KMs.

As we all know, the first metro in India was run on 24th December 2002 and in just 19 years, the metro network is more than 750 KMs wide. Moreover, 150 KMs of other metro networks will be added to the existing metro corridors by 2022. Altogether, 900 KMs of complete operational metro lines will be functional by 2022.

“With a strong emphasis on the Make in India initiative, now indigenously made metros are exported to Canada and Australia. So, we should not only be self-reliant in every aspect related to metro construction, but we should also be able to meet the needs of other countries.”

MDs of different Metro organizations from India shared their views and opinions at the conclave speak on different issues such as Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in the metro, technological upgradation, innovations, common mobility cards, and construction through the Make in India campaign.

Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, UPMRC, shared his vision & thoughts on the rapid expansion of the metro network in Uttar Pradesh and its role in urban transport on the centenary anniversary of the country’s Independence. He said that after expanding 23 KMs of Lucknow Metro, a trial run of Kanpur Metro is proposed in November, while fast construction is going on in Agra. The Metrolite project in Gorakhpur has already been approved and sent to the central government. There is a plan to construct an operational metro route of 28 KMs.

Considering the traffic analytics and growing congestion in Lucknow, a techno feasibility study of six other metro routes was conducted, according to which 114 KMs of metro routes have been identified in the city. According to the Metro Policy 2017, a metro project can be brought in the cities with a population of above 10 lakhs, and there are 12 such cities in the state. DPRs for Meerut, Prayagraj, and Varanasi have been prepared while proposals for Jhansi, Ayodhya, and Saharanpur are considered.
