Year End Review 2023: A Year of Achievements For NCRTC, Construction Works Made Rapid Progress, Namo Bharat Trains on Tracks

DELHI (Metro Rail News): 2023 was a year of achievements for the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). This year, NCRCTC achieved a significant milestone in its journey to provide the country with an advanced and transformative transit service through the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor. On October 20, 2023, the Honorable Prime Minister inaugurated India’s first RRTS and flagged off the Namo Bharat train. With this, the 17-kilometer-long Priority Section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot was operationalised for the public.

The construction of the RRTS corridor began in 2019, and commencing the operation of the Priority Section within just 4 years is a significant accomplishment.  It is especially remarkable considering that it is an entirely new system with all the sub-systems and trains of the RRTS corridor having been developed in an entirely new manner.

Along with this, with the relentless efforts of Team NCRCTC, the construction of the corridor continued to expand in the direction of Delhi and Meerut, progressing consistently. As the countdown of this year has begun, NCRCTC has reached a stage in the journey where trial runs have commenced in the sections beyond the Priority Section.

Here is a glimpse of some significant achievements attained by NCRCTC in the year 2023-

1. Operations Commenced on Priority Section: A Journey-

For NCRCTC, 2023 began with the commencement of trial runs on the Priority Section. These trial runs began in the first week of January 2023. During these trial runs, various sub-systems of the RRTS, such as the rolling stock, ETCS-2 signalling on the LTE network, ballastless track, and overhead equipment, were tested independently and later in synergy with each other to ensure their safe and compliant implementation and compatibility.

Stepping ahead in this direction, in June 2023, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) approved the operation of Namo Bharat train services on the Priority Section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot. With the approval from CMRS, the Priority Section of the RRTS became the first railway system in the country to be opened for operation on the entire section with a maximum operational speed of 160 kilometres per hour.

Subsequently, in the last quarter of the year, finally, the moment arrived which was awaited not only by NCRCTC and the people of Ghaziabad but by the entire nation. On October 20, 2023, in the presence of the Honorable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel, and the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, the Honorable Prime Minister inaugurated India’s first RRTS and flagged off the Namo Bharat Train. With this, from October 21, 2023, this section became operational for the public.

2. Tunneling Work Completed in Underground Section-

In the journey of providing rapid regional connectivity in the NCR, another crucial milestone was achieved when the tunnelling work for the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor was completed successfully. This corridor has a total of four underground stations: Anand Vihar in Delhi, and Meerut Central, Bhainsali, and Begumpul in Meerut.

The tunnelling journey of NCRTC commenced in February 2022, when Sudarshan 4.1 (Tunnel Boring Machine) was lowered into the launching shaft built at Anand Vihar, New Delhi to bore the tunnel between Anand Vihar towards New Ashok Nagar. On August 29, 2023, with the completion of boring the 2-kilometer-long tunnel between Anand Vihar and Sahibabad, the entire tunnelling work for the RRTS corridor was completed. It is a remarkable feat to construct parallel tunnels in the entire 12-kilometer-long underground section in less than 18 months, achieved by using seven state-of-the-art Sudarshan (TBM),

To construct these tunnels, more than 80,000 pre-cast segments have been used. These high-precision pre-cast tunnel segments were cast at the state-of-the-art casting yards established at Karkardooma, New Delhi, and Shatabdi Nagar, Meerut. The diameter of the RRTS tunnels is 6.5 m which is highly optimised as compared to global benchmarks of tunnels for a similar design speed of 180 Kmph with wider and higher rolling stock.

3. Stepping Towards Sustainability, NCRTC Established Solar Power Plants at Depots and Stations

In step with its commitment to adopt renewable energy and sustainable practices, NCRTC established a state-of-the-art Solar Power Plant at RRTS Depot at Duhai and Sahibabad RRTS Station and Duhai Depot RRTS Station.

With a total capacity of 729 kW, the Solar Power Plant established at Sahibabad station is equipped with 1620 high-efficiency solar panels. The plant will generate about 10 lakh units of electricity per annum as against the annual consumption of about 7.3 lakhs per annum for the auxiliary load of the station, thus making the Sahibabad Station a ‘Green Station with the distinction of being Carbon Negative’.

The solar plant at the Duhai Depot Station is equipped with 320 solar panels with an installed capacity of 108 kW.

Earlier in July, a solar power plant was established at RRTS Depot in Duhai with an installed capacity of 585kWp, making this Depot a Green Depot.

This initiative represents a major stride towards sustainability, as together, these solar power plants are expected to reduce approximately 1600 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year. The reduction is achieved by substituting conventional fossil fuel-based power sources with clean and green solar energy. This transition to solar energy aligns with NCRTC’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while optimizing operational costs. The solar energy produced through this Solar Plant will be monitored and optimized by a cutting-edge cloud-based application which will track the output regularly. This advanced technology ensures transparency, efficiency, and seamless management of the solar energy infrastructure.

4. RRTS Project Won Several Awards-

In the year 2023, what was noteworthy for NCRCTC was not only the revolutionary changes being made in the urban landscape through the RRTS project but also the recognition garnered for the innovative technologies, novel approaches, and strategic decisions implemented in it. The project not only received appreciation but also won several awards.

In the prestigious TAI Tunneling Awards 2023 organized by the Tunneling Association of India, the project was honoured in the ‘Environmental Initiatives of Tunneling’ category. Additionally, in the CNBC-AWAAZ Real Estate Awards 2023, the project received the ‘Special Commendation for Innovation and Excellence in Urban Transportation.’ Furthermore, NCRCTC was recognized with the highest ‘Project Award’ rating, a Platinum rating, for the Ghaziabad Receiving Substation (RSS) and Sahibabad RRTS Station. This Platinum rating was conferred at the Green Building Congress 2023 held in Chennai by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), representing the highest rating in the ratings provided by IGBC.

5. NCRTC Organized Various Skill Development Training Programs-

This year, NCRCTC organized various skill development training programs in the villages of Ghaziabad and Meerut districts. In this series, farmers were trained in modern agricultural techniques, and women were provided self-defence training.

NCRCTC understood the changing needs of farmers in evolving landscapes and, as a result, organized more than 100 training sessions for over 1500 farmers residing in 52 villages around the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor. These sessions provided them with training in modern urban agriculture techniques that can offer high returns per unit of land.

Polyhouse farming, drip irrigation farming, retractable greenhouse farming, hydroponics, and similar modern agricultural techniques were introduced to farmers by a team of agricultural specialists. These new methods of farming are environmentally and socially sustainable. The increasing demand in the market for nutrient-rich and organic produce will create opportunities for farmers to enhance their income by selling high-quality crops.

In addition, NCRCTC is making efforts not only to ensure the safe travel of women but also to empower them. In this direction, NCRCTC organized a self-defence training program for students at D.N. Degree College in Meerut. The program provided training by specialized instructors from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and more than 200 female students from various colleges in Meerut took part in the training.

In addition to these, initiatives such as training taxi drivers, gender sensitization for drivers and conductors, and skill development for employment continue to be implemented. These efforts highlight the inclusivity of the RRTS project and its positive impact on gender equality and other social aspects project. In the coming days, a large number of rural women will also be provided training in sewing and modern tailoring work.

6. Trial Run Commences in Section Beyond Priority Section, Namo Bharat Train Travels Up to Modi Nagar South-

After the commencement of operation of the Priority Section on the Delhi-Meerut-Ghaziabad RRTS corridor, the trial run has now begun in the section ahead of it.  Trials run of the Namo Bharat trains are being conducted from Duhai to Modi Nagar South Station. In this process, the electric OHE (Over Head Equipment) has been charged with a capacity of 25 KV from Murad Nagar Receiving Sub Station to Modi Nagar South and following this, the trial runs of the Namo Bharat train are being carried out in this section. Currently, the trains are running from Duhai Station to Murad Nagar Station and then further to Modi Nagar South, covering a distance of approximately 12 kilometres.

The 25 km stretch between Duhai and Meerut South RRTS station is the next section of the RRTS corridor to be operationalized for the public after the Priority Section. This section has a total of 4 stations, namely Murad Nagar, Modi Nagar North, Modi Nagar South, and Meerut South.

In June, the construction of the viaduct up to Meerut South was completed with the installation of the last span. Since then, various construction works like track laying, OHE installation, signalling and telecom, and electrical have been progressing at pace in this section. At present, track laying work is almost complete, and other works are in their final stages. Additionally, Muradnagar RSS is ready to supply electricity from Murad Nagar to Meerut South. Soon, OHE will be charged between Modi Nagar North and Meerut South stations, and trial runs will be conducted in this section by running trains up to Meerut South station.

7. Construction Progressing at Pace, Stations and Viaduct Taking Shape in Delhi and Meerut-

The construction of the RRTS corridor gained momentum in Delhi and Meerut. With the construction work progressing at pace, the outline of the RRTS viaduct from Delhi to Meerut became visible and most of the stations took shape.

In the elevated section of the Delhi segment, approximately 7 kilometres of the nearly 9-kilometer-long viaduct has been completed. As part of this, the construction of a bridge over the Yamuna River has been successfully completed, which was a complex process. Additionally, in the congested area of Kondli, a total of 360 meters of special steel spans were installed to cross the Gazipur Drain. Furthermore, the RRTS viaduct in New Ashok Nagar crossed over the Delhi Metro’s Blue Line. Currently, construction work is progressing to cross the Barapula viaduct.

Along with this, the track laying activities have been completed in about 1.5 track kilometres and the installation of OHE masts over about 2 kilometres have been completed on the constructed viaduct. The construction of two stations in the elevated section, Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar RRTS stations is also progressing. The majority of civil construction work at Sarai Kale Khan RRTS station has been completed, and currently, finishing, electrical, and maintenance work is underway. Similarly, civil construction work is being carried out for the concourse and platform level at the New Ashok Nagar station.

The tunnelling work in the underground section of Delhi is complete, and, the concourse and platform levels at the Anand Vihar station have been constructed and are now undergoing flooring work. Similarly, construction work in Meerut is progressing rapidly. The RRTS corridor has successfully crossed over the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Additionally, to cross the railway line at Partapur, a 90-meter-long special steel span, including eight large girders, has been installed. Furthermore, the construction of Meerut Metro stations, including Partapur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Bramhapuri, Meerut Central, and Bhaisali, is in its advanced stages. The construction of the Begumpul RRTS station is also being expedited.

In addition to these achievements, NCRTC has organized various community awareness programs to educate the public about the RRTS project. As part of this initiative, art competitions have been conducted in schools, and knowledge-sharing sessions have been organized in colleges. During these sessions, students were educated about various modern technologies and innovative methods being implemented in the RRTS. Additionally, street plays were organized to entertain the public and familiarize them with the project in an engaging manner. The purpose of this event is to encourage people to use public transportation instead of private vehicles, reducing dependence on private vehicles and promoting sustainable urban mobility.

NCRTC aims to operationalize the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor by June 2025, and witnessing the pace at which construction work is progressing, this destination is now within reach.

Afcons Infrastructure Launches Final Segment of Sabarmati Bridge for Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2

AHMEDABAD (Metro Rail News): Afcons Infrastructure, the construction contractor for the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project, marked a significant milestone this week by launching the final precast box segment for the Sabarmati River Bridge near Gandhinagar. The bridge, a crucial component of Phase 2’s 14.36 km Package C1, spans approximately 810 meters and plays a vital role in connecting Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) to GIFT City.

The Sabarmati Bridge, with a total length of 28.254 km, comprises 24 spans consisting of 340 segments. The construction progress has been notable, with the first segment launched in May 2023 and the final segment unveiled this week between piers P46 – P47.

Situated 19.3 km upstream from the Blue Line’s 298m Sabarmati Bridge, constructed by Tata Projects – CCECC JV during Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 1 (2018-2021), the new bridge enhances connectivity and infrastructure in the region.

Afcons Infrastructure was awarded the construction contract for Package C1, covering 14.36 km, by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) in Q4 2020. The scope of work includes the elevated section from Motera Stadium to GNLU, encompassing eight stations at Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba, Koba Gam, and GNLU.

Additionally, the contract involves the construction of a 5.42 km section from GNLU to GIFT City, featuring a bridge over the Sabarmati River and two stations at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

The construction team at Afcons achieved a significant milestone in December 2021 by launching the first U-girder. Subsequent progress indicates that 95% of U-girders have been successfully launched to date, underscoring the project’s steady advancement.

In related developments, Ranjit Buildcon celebrated the completion of the final U-girder for Package C2, a 6.478 km stretch connecting GNLU to Gandhinagar’s Sector-1, in September. Launch activities for Package C3, covering 7.553 km from Sector-1 to Mahatma Mandir, commenced in March, with the final launch milestone anticipated in the coming phases.

The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project continues to make significant strides, contributing to the region’s growth and reinforcing its position as a key player in India’s expanding metro network.

Bidders for Pune Metro’s  Line 4 & 5’s PPP Transaction Advisor Contract

PUNE (Metro Rail News): Pune Metro Rail Development Authority (PMRDA) has unveiled the bidders for the Transaction Advisory Services for the Pune Metro project’s upcoming Line 4 (Civil Court – Loni Kalbhor) and Line 5 (Khadakwasla – Kharadi). 

Responsibility/Scope of Work

The scope of work under the contract includes reviewing financial parameters, examining the viability of both projects, helping prepare the Concession Agreement bid documents (RFQ and RFP), and conducting the bidding process for selecting the Concessionaire.

Tender 

PMRDA had invited bids for the same in November this year, with a two-year contractual period. The estimated cost of the project remains unknown. 

Bidders 

The bidders for the same are : 

  1. Almondz Global Securities Ltd.
  2. aXYKno Capital Services Ltd.
  3. Credible Management Consultants Pvt. Ltd.
  4. Spine Advisory Pvt. Ltd.

Further Developments 

The bids are expected to go through technical evaluation in the coming days to decide on the final contractor for the project. It will give us the name of the lowest bidder and the probable awardee. 

Line 4, Pune Metro 

The 18 km long Line-4 runs from Civil Court to Loni Kalbhor. It will act as the extension of line 3  (Hinjawadi – Civil Court). DMRC prepared its DPR. It also includes spurs to Saswad & Swargate.  

Line 5, Pune Metro 

The 25.65 km long Line-5 runs from Khadakwasla to Kharadi. It will built on a PPP model. UMTC prepared its DPR and shares a Common alignment with Line-4 for a distance of approximately 4.6 km between Pul Gate and Hadapsar (Magarpatta) on Solapur Road.

DRA-DMRC JV Bags Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train’s Thane Depot Contract

MUMBAI (Metro Rail News): Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon – Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DRA – DMRC JV) was declared as the lowest bidder for the design & construction of the Thane Depot of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project or Specifically Package: D1 of the MAHSR Project. 

Scope of Contract

The scope of the contract includes the Design and Construction of the Thane Depot, including Civil Works, Building Works, Inspection Sheds, Maintenance Depot, and Installation, Testing and Commissioning of Maintenance Facilities, and other Associated works in the State of Maharashtra for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project. 

Thane Depot 

Initially, it will have 4 Inspection Lines and 10 Stabling Lines, which will go to 8 and 31, respectively. It will also consist of an Inspection bay & a Washing Plant. It will built on a parcel of 52 hectares of land to stabilise and maintain Shinkansen train sets. 

It will be the 2nd largest depot on the MAHSR Project after the Sabarmati Depot, which is currently under construction. 

Tender 

NHSRCL invited bids for Package D1 in December 2022 itself. It comes with a deadline of 2010 days or 5.5 years, while the bidders were declared in May this year.

Status of Contracts 

The last significant civil contract for the project is awaiting approval. In December 2022, the Sabarmati Depot (Package D2) civil construction contract was granted to Sojitz Corporation – Larsen & Toubro JV. Construction is currently in progress for the smallest depot in Surat as part of the scope of works for civil Package C4, covering a distance of 237.1 km.

MAHSR Corridor 

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Railway (MAHSR) is India’s inaugural high-speed train route that links Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The estimated cost of the project is approximately ₹1.08 lakh crore. The central government has committed to providing ₹10,000 crore, while Gujarat and Maharashtra will each contribute ₹5,000 crore. The remaining funds will be secured through a loan from Japan, offering a minimal interest rate of 0.1%.

Latest Updates on MAHSR Corridor

According to the most recent updates, the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) Station has achieved nearly 15% of its development, with NHSRCL installing approximately six bridges in Gujarat. These bridges span across six rivers in the region:

1. Par River (Valsad District)

2. Purna River (Navsari District)

3. Mindhola River (Navsari District)

4. Ambika River (Navsari District)

5. Auranga River (Valsad District)

6. Venganiya River (Navsari District)

NHSRCL has completed 100 km of viaducts and 250 km of pier erection for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project. The laying of the reinforced concrete (RC) track bed has commenced in Surat.

In a significant announcement, the Railway Minister has declared that the Surat-Bilmora stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train is scheduled to be commissioned by August 2026.

Shri Daljeet Singh, Advisor (Special Works), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), said that the Patna metro is committed to constructing sites within defined safety parameters. During his inspection of various Patna Metro Rail Project construction sites, he inspected the ongoing civil, electrical and track-related works at places like Malahi Pakdi, Khemnichak, Bhootnath Road, ISBT Depot, etc.

Besides assessing the progress and development work of the Patna Metro Rail Project, Shri Singh’s inspection centred on adhering to his directives aimed at ensuring public safety and facilitating pedestrian and vehicular movement by clearing encroachments along construction sites and parallel routes. Directives were also issued to remove barriers at completed construction sites, reducing congestion and ensuring smoother traffic flow. He stressed that besides the quality of work, DMRC is committed to minimal inconvenience for citizens near Patna metro construction areas. Regular inspections aim to accelerate construction and ensure safety and orderly progress in the construction processes.

Additionally, he inspected the preliminary mobilization work of the Heritage Art tunnel from Bihar Museum to Patna Museum. On Wednesday, Singh inspected construction sites at Gandhi Maidan, PMCH, Akashvani, Saguna More, Danapur, Rukanpura, and Patliputra metro stations. Besides expediting construction, he directed DMRC officials to ensure compliance with contractors regarding proper zebra crossings for pedestrians in areas where road configurations change due to construction.

Shri Daljeet Singh further directed officials to ensure the placement of appropriate signage lighting arrangements for people and vehicles, remove unnecessary hindrances, and subsequently recommence work at all Patna Metro Rail Project sites.

Mr Vinay Kumar Singh, Managing Director, NCRTC, inaugurated state-of-the-art Solar Power Plants installed at Sahibabad RRTS station and Duhai Depot RRTS station today, on Friday, 22 December 2023 at Sahibabad RRTS station in the presence of all the Directors and senior officials of NCRTC. This inauguration marks another step towards sustainability by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).

These solar initiatives of NCRTC are in line with its Solar Policy adopted in March 2021, aiming to increase the share of renewable energy by generating approximately 11 MW peak of in-house solar power across its stations, depots, and other facilities for traction and non-traction purposes over the next five years.

To contribute towards a clean and green environment, NCRTC has also taken a step towards achieving the highest rating of the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Certification. In this direction, NCRTC has recently been honoured with the highest rating of the prestigious ‘Project Award for IGBC’, a Platinum Rating for the Ghaziabad Receiving Sub Station (RSS) and Sahibabad RRTS station. Further, RRTS equipped with a green energy and minimum water consumption system will enhance the overall commuter experience on this green transport model and encourage greater public transport use.

KPIL Bags Delhi Metro Phase 4’s Electrification Contract Worth Rs 279 Crores

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail News): Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL) has won Delhi Metro’s Package DE-08, which entails electrification for the magenta and silver lines. 

Scope of Contract 

Scope of the package includes Design, Detail Engineering, Manufacture, Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning of 25KV AC Traction, 33KV Auxiliary Sub Stations (ASS), Associated Cabling and SCADA Systems for Underground Corridors of Magenta Line extension, specifically Line-8 Extension & Underground and Elevated corridor of Silver Line of Delhi Metro Phase 4. 

Detailed Scope

For Magenta Line: 25 kV AC traction, 33 kV Auxiliary Sub Stations (ASS), associated cabling and SCADA systems will be installed.

For Silver Line: Rigid OHE (ROCS) will be installed on the three underground packages, while flexible OHE (FOCS) will be installed on one elevated package. DC-04. 

Tender

DMRC invited the bids for the concerned package in April this year. The tender includes a deadline of 3 years from the date of issuance of the LoA, while the technical bids for the mae were opened in July to reveal the bidders. 

Further Developments 

A contract for Delhi Metro Phase 4’s package DE-08 can be expected to be awarded in the coming months as KPIL’s bid is way below DMRC’s estimated project cost of Rs 359.78 crore.

Phase IV of the Delhi Metro is a network expansion to new housing areas in the National Capital Region. On March 7, 2019, the union cabinet approved three ‘priority corridors’ out of six corridors of Metro’s Phase 4:

It has a total of 15 stations as Tughlakabad, Tughlakabad Railway Colony, Anandmayee Marg Junction, Tigri, Khanpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Saket G Block, Saket, Lado Sarai, Mehrauli, Kishangar, Masoodpur, Vasant Kunj (Sec-D), Mahipalpur and Delhi Aerocity.

Kochi Metro Unveils Bidders for the Phase 2 Construction

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has unveiled the names of the bidders who have submitted bids for the Kochi Metro’s Phase 2 contract. 

Scope of Contract 

The contract entails the design and Construction of an elevated viaduct and 10 Elevated Stations, Excluding Architectural Finishes, Building Services, Link Bridges and Entry-Exit Structures of Phase II of the Kochi Metro Rail Project from JLN Stadium to Infopark.

Bidders 

The bidders for the package are: 

  1. Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.
  2. KEC International Ltd.
  3. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL)

Further Process 

The bids would further go for technical evaluation, which would furnish us with the name of the lowest bidder for the package in the coming times. 

Pink Line, Kochi Metro 

It entails an 11.2 Km long Pink Line connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium with InfoPark at an estimated cost of Rs 1,957.05 Crores. The phase will likely be funded by a loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) with around a 3% interest rate. 

Stations on the Pink Line 

The stations of the Pink Line include  Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium ( next to Blue Line), Palarivattom Junction, Alinchuvadu, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamughal, Kakkanad Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, KINFRA Park, and InfoPark / Smart City (connected to Kochi Water Metro).

It is expected to be ready for commercial operations in 2028. 

With Particular Emphasis on women Passengers 

The 11.2 km line has been named the Pink Line to emphasise the safety of Women working at Infopark. This will ensure a safe and convenient transit system to ease their stress and ensure a safe and sensible environment, especially at night. 

KMRL

Chennai Metro Signs Contract with ST Engineering for Platform Screen Doors

CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has officially entered into a contract with ST Engineering Urban Solutions Ltd. for the implementation of the Platform Screen Doors (PSD) System. The contract, valued at INR 159.97 crores, is set to cover two elevated sections of Corridor-3 (Sholinganallur Lake to Sipcot 2) and Corridor-5 (Grain Market to Elcot) as part of the Phase-II project.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Thiru. M.A.Siddique I.A.S., Managing Director of CMRL, marked a significant milestone in the development of the metro rail infrastructure. Thiru. Rajesh Chaturvedi, Director (Systems & Operations), CMRL, and Ramaswamy Muthuraman, Vice President/Head PSD, Mobility (Rail & Road), ST Engineering Urban Solutions Ltd., inked the agreement, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing passenger and operational safety.

The scope of work outlined in the contract includes the provision of half-height Platform Screen Doors for 36 elevated stations. CMRL’s decision to introduce half-height platform screen doors aligns to enable driverless train operations, ultimately bolstering safety measures for both passengers and operations.

Under the agreement, ST Engineering Urban Solutions Ltd. will be responsible for the design, manufacture, supply, verification, delivery, installation, testing, commissioning, training, and providing technical support for a complete integrated Platform Screen Door System. This encompasses all control centers, platforms, equipment room sub-systems, and associated interfaces.

Thiru. A. Sankaramurthi (Deputy Advisor S&T, CMRL), Thiru. C. Murugamoorthy (Team Leader, General Consultant), along with other senior officials from CMRL and ST Engineering Urban Solutions Ltd., were present during the contract signing ceremony. Agra Metro: TBM Shivaji achieves Second Breakthrough at Taj Mahal Ramp Area

AGRA (Metro Rail News): The Afcons Infrastructure – SAM India Consortium marked a significant milestone last Wednesday as the tunnel boring machine (TBM) Shivaji (S-718C) achieved its second breakthrough at the ramp area, (near the cut and cover ramp area ) for the Agra Metro Phase 1 project, covering a total distance of 29.40 km.

The Ø6.63m diameter Herrenknecht Earth Pressure Balance machine, refurbished for this endeavour, is the third machine employed to construct twin underground tunnels spanning 14.25 km on Line-1’s 7.93 km RBS College Ramp – Taj Mahal Ramp section (Package AGCC-02).

TBM Shivaji has successfully constructed tunnel from Taj Mahal Metro Station to Ramp Area (Cut and Cover ramp)

TBM Shivaji, operational since early August 2023, initially completed a 228m tunnel in just 54 days for the up-line between Taj Mahal Station’s launch shaft and the cut & cover ramp on Fatehabad Road, with the breakthrough event occurring on October 1.

Following this, the machine was disassembled, transported back to Taj Mahal Station, and relaunched on November 2 to construct the 236m down-line tunnel. Impressively, the machine returned after a mere 42-day journey.

Speaking on the same, MD UPMRC Shri Sushil Kumar said, “This is an important milestone as the tunnel section for three underground stations has been completed. We are striving to commence metro operations ahead of schedule instead of actual deadline of August 2024. The three Elevated stations & train depot are ready. The testing of metro trains is being conducted successfully on the mainline.”

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had granted Afcons – SAM Consortium the civil construction contract for this section, valued at Rs. 1819.79 crore, in March 2022, with a 48-month deadline. This section spans from chainage 3630.000 to 11564.485, encompassing twin tunnels that connect seven stations, including Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, SN Medical College, Agra College, Raja ki Mandi, and RBS College.

This accomplishment marks the seventh breakthrough for Afcons – SAM JV in the project’s 5.2 km Priority Corridor, linking Jama Masjid to Taj East Gate. Only one more breakthrough, led by TBM Ganga at Taj Mahal Station, is pending to complete the Priority Corridor. Subsequently, approximately 10 more breakthroughs are anticipated between Jama Masjid and RBS College Ramp, connecting to the elevated 3.725 km Package AGCC-05, for which bidding is currently underway.

The TBM breakthrough is one of the most challenging achievements in a metro project which requires high accuracy and ultimate precision. The TBM has come from Chennai and is equipped with high tech features and various safety parameters. It is to be noted that other two TBM’s Yamuna and Ganga have already carried out the contruction of tunnel work of the Underground section of the 6 km Priority stretch of Agra Metro Project. The TBM has constructed the tunnel till the ramp area and the process of construction of underground section of priority corridor, Agra Metro Rail Project has reached its completion.
