Mumbai (Metro Rail News): Mumbai’s long-awaited first underground metro is gearing up for its launch on July 24. Recently, Vinod Tawde, General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), announced on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), “Prime Minister @NarendraModi ji had given a guarantee to make the life of Mumbaikars easier, and this is going to be fulfilled. Mumbai’s first underground metro (Aqua Line) is starting from July 24, which will give new impetus to the speed of the city.”
Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line)

India’s central government approved the Aqua Line on June 28, 2013, at an estimated cost of Rs. 23,136 crore. Mumbai Metro’s Aqua Line covers a total distance of 33.5 kilometers from Aarey Colony to Cuffe Parade via BKC. This line features 27 stations, 26 of which are underground, with the remaining 1 being an at-grade station. The Aqua Line will integrate with existing metro lines, bus, and suburban rail services along its route, which navigates through North Mumbai to South Mumbai.
Operational Plan of Aqua Line
The Aqua Line is proposed to become operational in two phases. Initially, operations will commence on the Aarey Colony to BKC route. In the second phase, operations will be extended all the way to Cuffe Parade.
Timings
Commuters travelling on the Aqua Line will be able to board the metro trains starting from 6:30 am, with services continuing until 11:00 pm. The operation of the Aqua Line is expected to reduce road traffic congestion.
Operation Management
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will manage the train operations on the Aqua Line for the initial 10 years. DMRC will oversee the day-to-day operations of Line 3, including the management of the operation control centre, depot control centre, stations, running trains, maintenance of trains, and all metro systems infrastructure.
