This line will run for 32.3 km from Wadala to Kasarvadavali through an elevated alignment, and with its 2.8 km extension under Line 4A up to Gaimukh, the total length will be 35.1 km. The initial trial run was conducted on a 4.4 km section between Gaimukh and Vijay Garden, covering four stations. This section is part of the first phase of the project. The trial was flagged off by Maharashtra CM, Shri Devendra Fadnavis.

Lines 4 and 4A are being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Line 4 extends 35.2 km from Wadala to Kasarvadavali, and the development of this line is expected to cost ₹14,549 crore, while Line 4A is a 2.88 km extension from Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh, costing approximately ₹949 crore.

The alignment passes through several densely populated areas and is designed to integrate with existing and upcoming metro lines. There is a potential future interchange with the proposed Mumbai Metro Line 11, which would extend connectivity from Wadala to CSMT.

On this occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Shinde said that more than 172 years after the inauguration of the railway in Thane, the city is now being served by a modern metro system, which is a historic moment for Thane. He added that the planned 58-km elevated corridor, which could result from integration with Metro Line 11, will be the first of its kind in India and is expected to support traffic management in the region.
