Kochi to host UMI Conference in October 2021

KOCHI (Metro Rail News): Kochi will host the 14th Urban Mobility International(UMI) Conference, being organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in October 2021.
Mr Durga Shanker Mishra IAS, Secretary of MoHUA made the announcement during the valedictory speech made at the 13th UMI Conference held online. The theme selected for the Kochi UMI Conference is “Mobility for All”. UMI selected Kochi considering the growth Kochi City has achieved in the transport segment in the last few years.

The government selected Kochi considering the various transport-related developments happening in the city under the aegis of Kochi Metro.

“Kochi is the first city in the country to bring in an integrated Water and land transport model. The Water Metro is a unique project and other states in the country should adopt it. Kochi Metro has also achieved many firsts in terms of the cashless fare collection system, thematic station development, employment of women and transgenders etc. Kochi is also the first to implement the Metropolitan Transport Authority. There is a multimodal transport hub (Vyttila Hub) in the city which will be developed to international standards.” said Mr Durga Shanker Mishra. He also lauded the rich cultural heritage of Kochi as well as its backwaters and beaches.
Additional Chief Secretary Mr Alkesh Kumar Sharma IAS, MD of KMRL extended a warm invitation and welcomed all the delegates to Kochi and Kerala. “UMI Conference is one of the most important and largest mobility-related conferences organised by the Government of India. It is a proud moment for Kochi to hold the event next October. We are also glad that the Union Ministry is lauding the efforts of Kerala Government promoting an integrated Transport system in Kochi and the major role of Kochi Metro in that.” he said.
“The event will be held in Kochi from October 29, 2021, to October 31, 2021. The primary objective of the conference is to disseminate information to the cities, whose officials attend the conference to help them keep up-to-date with the latest and best urban transport practices globally. Delegates will also get the opportunity to visit many tourist places in and around Kochi during and after the event”, a statement read.
