Alstom Unveils First Trainset For Line 4 Of Chennai Metro Phase 2

Chennai (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro Phase 2 witnessed another milestone as Alstom Transport finally unveiled the first of 36 train-sets for Line 4 at their Sri City, Andhra Pradesh facility in the presence of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) officials on 22 September.

The 36 train-sets for Line 4 will be operated in formations of DMC+TC+DMC where DMC = Driving Motor Car and TC = Trailer Car. 

The trains are expected to have a maximum design speed of 90 kmph and will be capable of GoA4 grade of automation. 

In a 3-coach configuration, each train will be 67.8 metres long and be capable of accommodating approximately 1000 passengers (crush load conditions).

The Poonamallee Depot, located in western Chennai, will maintain these trainsets.

 Package ARE03A 

Alstom was awarded with Package ARE03A a Rs. 946.92 crore contract in July 2022 to manufacture and supply 26 driverless train-sets of 3 coaches for Line 4 of Chennai Metro. 

In 2023, CMRL extended the contract with an additional Rs 269 crore for the procurement of 10 more trainsets for Line 4. Now Alstom is responsible for supplying a total of 36 trainsets. 

The trains will be operated on line 4 of chennai metro phase 2 between Light House and Poonamallee Bypass through 30 stations.

Rolling Stock contract for Line 3 & Line 5

BEML Ltd. was declared as the lowest bidder for a contract to supply 210 coaches for Line 3 and Line 5 of 116.1 km Chennai Metro’s Phase 2 project on 18 September. This development comes under package ARE02A.
