CMRL & Alstom Ink Contract for 32 Driverless Trains for Chennai Metro Phase 2 

Chennai (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro Rail Limited and Alstom Transport India Limited have signed a Contract Agreement for the procurement of 32 driverless 3-car (UTO) trains consisting of 96 cars for Phase 2 of Chennai Metro. 

The contract agreement was signed by Thiru. Manoj Goyal, Director (Systems & Operations) on behalf of CMRL and Thiru. Parag Nandlal Gohel, Customer Director (South) on behalf of M/s. ALSTOM Transport India Limited. 

Thiru. A. R. Rajendran, CGM (RS & S&T)-CMRL, Thiru. P. Thiagarajan JGM (RS)-CMRL, and other senior officials from CMRL, General Consultant AEON and ALSTOM were present during the occasion.

About the Rolling Stock of Chennai Metro Phase 2

On 28 April 2025, Alstom Transport India received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for the rolling stock Contract ARE04A of Chennai Metro Phase 2.

Under this contract, the first train is scheduled to be delivered to CMRL by February 2027 at the CMRL Phase 2 Depot. The subsequent trains will be delivered between September 2027 and May 2028 and tested at the CMRL site.

Scope of Work 

The scope of work under this contract includes the “Design, Manufacture, Supply, Testing, Commissioning, Training of Personnel and Comprehensive Maintenance Contract for Fifteen (15) years of Standard Gauge Metro Rolling Stock (Electrical Multiple units)” of 96 cars to form 32 UTO trains.
