CHENNAI (Metro Rail News): Chennai Metro rail Limited (CMRL) has decided to deploy a squad of martial arts-trained women officers in its trains.

The Team

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has recently established a specialised team known as the ‘pink squad,’ comprising 20 to 25 trained women proficient in martial arts. This initiative stems from recommendations from a safety survey targeting female passengers conducted last year.

Members of the pink squad hold brown belts in martial arts and have undergone comprehensive briefings on enhancing the security of women commuters. In response to the survey findings, CMRL enhanced CCTV surveillance and introduced a dedicated helpline for female passengers.

Responsibility & Purpose

The squad is deployed to carry out round-the-clock patrolling on the trains and stations. These enhance women’s safety and convenience on the Chennai metro trains and stations.

Instances of Misuse

As per a survey conducted on women’s safety last year, out of the 12,000 women who took part in the survey, most of them submitted positive responses regarding safety but complained about the issues that persist in the system.

Occupancy of Seats

Among the other issues, occupancy of the women’s seats by male passengers is one of the major issues concerning women’s safety and convenience.
