In a move to railway capacity enhancement, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has granted approval for four major railway multitracking projects on 21 July. These projects are valued at around ₹11,169 crore.
The projects cover 13 districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand. These projects will add 574 kilometres to the Indian Railways network and are targeted for completion by 2028-29.
Project | Type of Work | States Involved |
Itarsi – Nagpur | Fourth Line | Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra |
Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) – Parbhani | Doubling | Maharashtra |
Aluabari Road – New Jalpaiguri | Third & Fourth Lines | West Bengal |
Dangoaposi – Jaroli (including Barajamda – Banspani) | Third & Fourth Lines | Odisha, Jharkhand |
These projects have been undertaken as part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which emphasises multi-modal connectivity through integrated planning and stakeholder consultations.
The proposed railway multitracking projects are expected to bring socio-economic and logistical benefits. Approximately 2,309 villages, comprising a population of around 43.6 lakh, will be directly impacted by these infrastructure upgrades. During the construction phase, the projects are projected to generate an estimated 2.29 crore person-days of direct employment, which will help in the growth of local economies.
These routes will come up along key freight corridors and play a critical role in the transportation of essential commodities such as coal, cement, clinker, gypsum, fly ash, containers, agricultural produce, and petroleum products. By enhancing line capacity and operational efficiency, the upgraded corridors are projected to accommodate an additional 95.91 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic.
The augmented network of railways will increase the frequency of operations and help to decongest the existing railway.
