KOLKATA (Metro Rail News): Kolkata Metro, the country’s oldest metro network, achieved a major milestone with the inauguration of three important stretches by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 August 2025. The newly launched sections span across the Yellow Line, Green Line, and Orange Line.

The inauguration of the three new sections has expanded the Kolkata Metro network by an additional 13.61 km, further strengthening the city’s rapid transit infrastructure and enhancing overall connectivity.
The inaugurated sections are:
Metro Line | Section | Length |
Green Line | Esplanade – Sealdah | 2.45 km |
Yellow Line | Noapara – Jai Hind Bimanbandar | 6.77 km |
Orange Line | Beleghata – Hemanta Mukhopadhyay | 4.39 km |

On this occasion, PM Modi said, “A city like Kolkata is the pride of our country’s past and future. Now that India is on its way to becoming the world’s third-largest economy, the role of Kolkata and Dum Dum is very significant.” He also mentioned, “Before 2014, there was only 250 km of metro route in the country. Today, the metro network in the country has exceeded 1,000 km,”
West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya, and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar were among the dignitaries present at the programme.
