PM Modi Shows Green Light To Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aarey Colony-BKC) 

Mumbai (Metro Rail News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally inaugurated the long-awaited Mumbai Metro Line 3 between Aarey colony to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)  spanning 12 km through 10 stations. Furthermore, he has also laid the foundation for Thane Metro.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 

Mumbai Metro Line 3, also referred as Aqua Line, a 33.5 km stretch covers 27 stations providing connectivity between Cuffe Parade and Aarey colony. 

Initially, PM Modi inaugurated the Line 3 section from BKC to Aarey colony, covering 10 stations.

The underground tunnels and stations for Mumbai Metro Line 3 from north to south has been constructed through 3 packages which were awarded in july 2016.

As per Alstom’s press release, Alstom’s engagement with Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) for the Aqua Line includes manufacturing of 31 lightweight, fully furnished modern metro trains of 8 cars each, which is one of the biggest rolling stock contracts in the urban sector for the company in India. It also includes signalling solutions comprising:

  • Driverless operation, facilitated by the latest generation of CBTC communications-based train control technology, Urbalis Forward, which features GOA4, the highest grade of automation,
  • Computer-based interlocking
  • Automatic train supervision
  • Integrated Platform screen doors (PSD),
  • Telecommunication systems as well as the Mechanical and Electrical supervisory control and data acquisition system (M&E SCADA).

Further Updates

As per MMRC, the operation on Line 3 will begin from 7 october with the last train departing at 10:30 am. While the full fledged operations will begin from 8 october.

Delhi (Metro Rail News): The long-awaited Delhi Section of the Delhi Meerut RRTS corridor has finally advanced as the NCRTC commenced trial runs on the Sahibabad–New Ashok Nagar Section. This marks a major milestone, as Namo Bharat trains is now entering Delhi, bringing the corridor’s Delhi section closer to the already operational section from Sahibabad to Meerut South.

NCRTC MD, Shri Shalabh Goel was present on the occasion with senior officers to witness this moment. Namo Bharat train has been operated manually to check the Civil Structure compatibility in the trials. As testing advances, NCRTC will carry out comprehensive evaluations to assess the train’s integrated performance and its coordination with various subsystems such as tracks, signalling, Platform Screen Doors (PSDs), and overhead power supply systems. Extensive trial runs, including high-speed tests, are planned over the next few months.

NCRTC Initiates Trial Run on Delhi Section of RRTS Corridor

This 12 km stretch of the corridor is going to connect Sahibabad RRTS station to New Ashok Nagar RRTS station having two RRTS stations of Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar. Once operational, it will offer commuters a fast and efficient travel option between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South RRTS station, reducing the travel time to less than 40 minutes.

Anand Vihar RRTS station is expected to become one of the busiest commuter transit hubs, with significant daily footfall due to its proximity to a Metro station serving two Metro lines, a railway station, and two ISBTs—one on the Delhi side and the other at Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh. NCRTC is ensuring the seamless integration of these various transit modes to offer commuters effortless convenience and accessibility, making Anand Vihar RRTS station a model for multi-modal integration.

The New Ashok Nagar RRTS station is located less than  100 meters from the New Ashok Nagar Metro Station. To integrate these two transport modes, NCRTC will provide a footbridge (FOB) connecting the concourse level of the Metro station to the concourse of the RRTS station. Additionally, two more FOBs will enhance accessibility at the New Ashok Nagar RRTS station—one connecting Chilla Village and Mayur Vihar Extension, and the other near the Ancient Shiv Temple for easy access to New Ashok Nagar residents. All these will provide easy access to the residents of New Ashok Nagar.

NCRTC’s Achievement

NCRTC recently earned top honors at the UIC Sustainability Impact Awards 2024 in Germany, winning both the Best Transit Award for Seamless Connectivity and the prestigious Overall Winner Award, standing out among numerous global entries.

Currently, Namo Bharat train services operate over a 42 km stretch from Sahibabad to Meerut South, covering nine stations of Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, Duhai Depot, Muradnagar, Modi Nagar South, Modi Nagar North, and Meerut South. With the operationalization of Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar section, the operational length will increase to 54 km with 11 RRTS stations. 

Delhi Section of RRTS Corridor

Delhi section has three stations New Ashok Nagar, Anand Vihar, and Sarai Kale Khan RRTS station. The work on the rest of the section from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan station is in the final stage of construction and track laying activities are in progress.

Once the entire 82 km corridor is completed by the targeted deadline of June 2025, passengers will be able to travel between Delhi and Meerut in less than an hour.

Noida Metro Witnessed a Steady Growth in Ridership in September

Noida ( Metro Rail News): After reaching a remarkable milestone last month, Noida Metro’s ridership trend is still rising. In September 2024, Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) reported that the average daily traffic increased to 64,068 people, a notable rise from prior months, which was 55,777 in August 2024.

INCREMENT IN RIDERSHIP 

Throughout the previous year, the NMRC has seen a consistent rise in ridership; the current daily ridership has increased by 13% over the same period last year. In comparison, the average daily ridership for 2023–2024 was 47,427 and 2024-2025 ridership went up to 53,600 in September 2024.

NMRC AWARDED WITH SEVERAL PROJECTS 

Dr. Lokesh M., MD/NMRC, had a meeting to review the progress accomplished. During the meeting, it was mentioned to increase revenue generation and property development, NMRC has given 11 new contracts in the last year, bringing in a total of ₹6.05 crore in revenue each year. 

Along with the contracts that have been awarded, NMRC has also announced several upcoming tenders that should bring in ₹5.15 crore a year.

 NMRC is aiming to increase its commercial footprint through these tenders, includes:

  • Licensing of Inside Station Advertising Rights in NMRC Network at 06 Metro Stations.

  • Establishing, running, and maintaining mixed convenience stores in the form of kiosks at six metro stations in the NMRC network by licensing commercial bare space that is accessible beneath the stairway structure
  • The ground-floor commercial area at Pari Chowk Metro Station is licensed for use.
  • The licensing of commercial areas at Depot Metro Station and Secs. 101, 81, and 83.
  •  The Noida region’s Metro Piers are available for the license of advertisement rights.
  • Parking will be available at 15 metro stations.

In addition to the above-mentioned, Non-Fare-Box revenue generating is planned through Property Development at a large land piece in Sector-94. Inquiry number development for parking/advertisement rights and other property-related questions was also mandated by the MD.

As per the NMRC’s press release, “These property development initiatives are key to enhancing the financial sustainability of NMRC. By maximising the commercial potential of metro stations and associated infrastructure, we are creating a solid foundation for future growth while providing additional amenities to the public”.

Operational route: Currently, the Purple Line is operating between PCMC and Civil Court spanning 13.3 km through 11 stations.

  • The Purple Line’s 3.3 km extension between Civil Court and Swargate recently became operational. This section features 3 stations.
  • The extension from Swargate to Katraj is a 5.464 km stretch with 3 stations. The tenders have been floated for the same section. 
  • Purple Line’s northern extension from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Nigdi (under construction) covers 4.519 km with 4 stations.

Delhi (Metro Rail News): Larsen and Toubro’s Tunnel Boring Machine DZ1123 (TBM-2) achieved a breakthrough on 5 October at Chhatarpur Mandir Station of Golden Line (Tughlakabad-Aerocity), which is being developed as part of Delhi Metro’s Phase 4.

For this assignment, TBM DZ1123 constructed about 860-metre-long underground tunnel between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir Station. This development marks the completion of the underground tunnel between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir Station on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor.

This was TBM-2 (DZ1123)’s second breakthrough, which is also the fourth overall breakthrough for Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 project in the 6.51 km Package DC-09. This package connects the Kishangarh and Saket G Block stations.

As per the DMRC’s release, this tunnel has been constructed at an average depth of approximately 12 meters, with about 613 rings installed, each having an inner diameter of 5.8 meters.

The tunnelling work involved several challenges, including relocating a 66 KV electrical HT line. Additionally, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) had to pass beneath the existing Yellow Line viaduct without causing any disruption to Metro train operations on the Yellow Line.

Package DC-09 of Delhi Metro Phase 4

In March 2022, L&T secured Package DC-09 at Rs. 1428 crore from DMRC with a 42-month deadline. 

This package includes 4 stations:

  • Chhattarpur Interchange with Yellow Line)
  • Chhattarpur Mandir
  • IGNOU
  • Neb Sarai

On 21 August 2024, TBM-1 achieved a breakthrough at Chhattarpur Mandir Station and built an 865-meter parallel tunnel between Chhattarpur Station and Chhattarpur Mandir Station.

  • HCMTR or Ring Line, a 36 km stretch from Ambedkar Chowk to Kirloskaar with 44 stations in total. 

The Aqua Line’s extensions from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and between Ramwadi and Wagholi spanning 1.12 km and 11.63 km will be executed under Pune Metro Phase 1 extension. Previously these extensions were part of Pune Metro Phase 2 project.

Maharashtra (Metro Rail News): The Bullet train project advanced as the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL) called for bids for the third and final track contract (T-1) of the 508.17 Km Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor.

Package T-1 (Bullet train project)

Work scope: The scope of work for Package T-1 includes designing, supplying, and building tracks, including testing and commissioning, for a double-line high-speed railway between Zaroli Village (km. 156.600) and Mumbai Station at Bandra-Kurla complex (MAHSR km. -0.255) on a Design-Build lump sum price basis.

Accordingly, T-1’s scope comprises track work at:

  • 1.028 km Package C-1 (underground BKC Station being built by MEIL – HCC JV)
  • 20.377 km Package C-2 (underground tunnel by Afcons Infrastructure)
  • 135.45 km Package C-3 (three stations and an elevated viaduct by Larsen & Toubro)

The Mumbai – Ahmedabad bullet train project consists of three track projects:

J – Slab Track System (High-Speed Rail Project)

The Bullet Train project will use a unique J -Slab track system instead of the typical ballasted track system used in main-line railway lines.

The J-Slab Track structure is a distinctive feature of the Japanese High-Speed Railway, generally known as Shinkansen. Japan is credited with the invention of slab track, which has now developed into a synonym for high-speed track.

According to Japanese experience, J- Slab Track appears to come out on top when it comes to life cycle costs, even if its initial construction costs are roughly 1.3 times more than those of traditional ballasted tracks.

Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project 

Moreover, the Mumbai- Ahmedabad bullet train project is India’s first bullet train project connecting a 508.17 km long route from   Mumbai( Maharashtra) to Ahmedabad ( Gujarat) featuring 12 stations at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.1 lakh. The project is currently under construction and expected to be completed by 2026.

Bangalore (Metro Rail News): Bangalore Metro’s Green Line extension advanced as the commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) and his team completed the final safety inspection for the 3.03 km long Nagasandra – Madavara stretch.

The Green Line extension in the north from Nagasandra to Madavara, spanning 3.03 Km, features three stations.

The CMRS team’s scope of investigation included:  

  • Assessment of the line’s viaduct built by Simplex Infrastructure

Bangalore Metro Green Line 

Operational Route: The Green Line of Bangalore Metro is operational between Nagasandra station and the Silk route station spanning 30 km approx with 29 stations in total. 

The Green Line from Nagasandra to Yelachenahalli is a part of Phase 1. Later in Phase 2, the Green Line was extended south from Yelachenahalli to Silk Route spanning 6.29 Km via 5 stations.

Process Ahead

The CMRS will now submit the investigation report to BMRCL. The next steps for BMRCL will involve addressing any identified deficiencies and submitting a compliance report back to the CMRS for review.

Central Government Approved Chennai Metro’s Phase 2

Chennai (Metro Rail News): India’s Central government cabinet on 3rd October finally approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Chennai Metro Phase 2 spanning 116.1 km with 3 corridors in total. 

MK Stalin, chief minister of Tamil Nadu submitted the memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding funds from the central government. Furthermore, the memo highlighted three issues that have been consistently demanded by the state including the 50% equity in sharing the metro phase 2 project.

The total cost of Chennai Metro Phase 2 project is Rs.63.346 crores out of which the central government will be funding the with Rs. 7,425 crore. While the ₹33,593 crore will be financed through different banks. Furthermore,  The remaining amount of Rs.22.228 will be provided by the state government.

The Chennai Metro Project was approved by the Tamil Nadu government in 2019 with an estimated cost of Rs 61.843 crores.

Recent Developments In Chennai Metro Phase 2 

Recently, Alstom Transport unveiled the first 36 train set for Line 4 (Orange Line) of Chennai Metro Phase 2 at their Sri City, Andhra Pradesh facility in the presence of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).

Another development for Chennai Metro Phase 2 was recorded when L&T’s TBM Kaveri achieved breakthrough at Adyar Junction Station under package TU-02. 

Furthermore, BEML Ltd. was declared as the lowest bidder to supply 210 coaches for the 116.1 km Chennai Metro’s Phase 2 project by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL).

Roles Served By Srinivas Katikithala

Srinivas Katikithala started his exemplary career in 1998. In the early phase of his career he headed the Parivartan Cell, a Change and innovation Management Unit within the Chief Minister’s Office in Gujarat. 

Then for five years approx From October 2004 to November 2009 he held the position of Managing Director at the Gujarat Urban Development Company. 

Later from November 2009 to July 2012 he served as Secretary to the Government and Joint Managing Director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam (SSNNL). 

From July 2012 to June 2015 he was serving as Principal Secretary in the General Administration Department of the Government of Gujarat.

Katikithala has moreover worked at the state level. From june 2015 to may 2017 he held a position of Principal Secretary to the Government in the Revenue Department of Gujarat 

At his crucial stage of his career, between may 2017 and august 2018, Katikithala served as Joint Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) 

Katikithala has held numerous positions within the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Notably, between June 2020 and August 2021, he served as an Establishment Officer within the Government of India.

Recently MMRDA announced a significant achievement in the ongoing Metro Line-5 (Thane – Bhiwandi) project with the successful erection of two special spans—57.50m and 46.00m—using high-capacity cranes (450T & 700T). This complex operation, which required immense engineering expertise and precision, was especially challenging as it took place not only in the middle of a busy road but also right above the Majowada Flyover, in a densely populated residential area.

Given the location, MMRDA had to take extensive precautions, ensuring that all safety regulations were strictly followed and that local rules were adhered to. Despite the added difficulty, the team executed the operation seamlessly in just 5 hours during the night, minimising traffic disruption. This was possible due to support and approval of local authorities.

For the 57.50m span between Pier 10-11, tandem lifting of girders weighing 290 MT was carried out on Ghodbunder Road. Similarly, the 46.00m span on the Thane-Bhiwandi road was completed using a super-lift arrangement due to the 20m crane radius. 

This achievement underscores the team’s technical competence and dedication to timely project completion, setting a benchmark for future phases. Traffic was restored promptly after the operations, and the local community was minimally impacted.

11 Firms Submit Bids For Lucknow Metro Line-2’s Geotechnical Contract

Lucknow (Metro Rail News): A total of Eleven firms have submitted bids to carry out geotechnical soil investigation for the Lucknow Metro Phase 1B project spanning 11.165 km . 

In August 2024 UPMRC invited bids for its geotechnical investigation with an estimated budget of Rs. 77.21 lakh and a 90 day deadline. Furthermore,the technical bids were opened on 1 October to reveal the name of bidders.

The contractor appointed for Package LKGS-01 will conduct a Detailed Geo-Technical Survey for the East-West Corridor of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project Phase 1B, stretching from Charbagh to Vasantkunj, including the Depot at Hardoi Road.

This survey will involve subsurface investigations to evaluate soil properties and groundwater conditions, providing essential data for the design and construction phases of the project.

Thane (Metro Rail News): Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. ( Maha Metro) floated a tender for appointing a general consultant for the Thane Metro Project. Maha-metro posted a primary tender notice regarding the contract on the same day.

Scope of work:

The appointed general consultant will be responsible for providing consultancy services in design, supervision, safety, quality control and contract management for the Thane Metro Project.

Thane Metro project 

Thane Metro, officially known as Thane Integral Ring Metro is a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) approved by MMRCL in August 2024 with an estimated budget of Rs. 12,200 crore.

Thane metro consists of 1 corridor spanning 29 km through 22 stations in which 20 stations will be elevated while remaining 2 stations will be underground.
