CHENNAI (Metro Rail News):The state government of Tamil Nadu has provided a major boost to expand the metro infrastructure in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu government has approved the administrative sanction for extending the metro corridor from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram, further strengthening the scope of Chennai Metro’s Phase II project. Originally, this corridor was designed to run between Light House and Poonamallee, but with the latest decision, the alignment will now be stretched to cover Sunguvarchatram as well.

The proposed extension from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram will span 27.9 km and include 14 metro stations along the route. The project has been allocated a total outlay of ₹2,126 crore, of which a substantial share about ₹1,836 crore is earmarked for land acquisition. The extension from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram is part of a larger 52.94 km corridor that will ultimately connect Poonamallee with the proposed Parandur greenfield airport. This ambitious stretch is planned at an estimated cost of ₹15,906 crore.

In the government order (G.O.) issued on 4 September, the State government directed the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to initiate preparatory works, including land acquisition, road development, and related works, to facilitate smooth implementation of the extension.

This move comes soon after the Tamil Nadu government approved the Phase I extension from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam, announced on September 3, 2025. The 15.5 km stretch, connecting the airport with the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam, has been allocated ₹1,964 crore for land acquisition, utility shifting, and allied works.
